    Study Notes

    Cell Cycle and Control Mechanisms

    • Cell division, a key process for reproduction and growth, is not always required nor always used all the time
    • External regulators or factors like growth factors are signals that trigger cell growth and division, and the presence or absence of signals can determine whether or not cell division occurs
    • Sometimes, cells can speed up their production rate and divide faster at specific times. External regulators can speed up the production of certain cells, such as skin cells.
    • Apoptosis: programmed cell death is important for development and repair of damaged tissue.
    • Necrosis: unplanned/unprogrammed cell death, a result of environmental factors can cause harm to surrounding cells. Necrosis also often affects surrounding cells, in contrast to apoptosis which does not damage nearby cells.
    • Cancer is linked to uncontrolled cell growth and division. Uncontrolled cell growth/division can be problematic and cause harm.
    • Tumor: a mass of cancer cells that can lead to harm to surrounding tissue and organs
    • Not all tumors are cancerous, some are benign
    • Natural killer cells target cancerous or damaged/infected cells and inhibit their growth
    • Some types of cancer are known to be genetically predisposed (such as Henrietta Lacks' cervical cancer)
    • Research is still ongoing on ways to better manage and prevent cancer. Research continues to discover more about the causes of cancer and new ways to manage and prevent it.
    • Henrietta Lacks' cells (HeLa cells) were pivotal in medical/scientific research due to their immortality
