What is a Eukaryote?
- Eukaryotes are organisms with cells containing DNA within a membrane-bound nucleus, separate from the cytoplasm.
- Eukaryotes include animals, plants, fungi, and protists.
The Nucleus
- The largest organelle in the cell; contains DNA and proteins.
- Chromatin appears as darkened patches under microscopy.
- Some proteins regulate cellular activity.
- Makes ribosomes.
- Contains nuclear pores for substance exchange.
Cytoplasm
- The gel-like fluid surrounding and supporting organelles.
- Maintains cell shape.
- Facilitates metabolic and enzymatic reactions.
- Stores molecules for cellular processes.
Cell Membrane
- Dynamic structure composed of a phospholipid bilayer, proteins, sugars, and cholesterol.
- Facilitates the movement of molecules and ions between the inside and outside of the cell.
- Communicates with the cellular environment.
Mitochondria
- Energy-generating organelles with two membranes (outer and inner).
- The inner membrane has cristae projecting into a fluid called the matrix.
- Contains enzymes that catalyze aerobic respiration to produce ATP.
Chloroplasts
- Double membrane organelle filled with stroma.
- Contains stacks of flattened sacs called thylakoids, arranged in grana.
- Contain chlorophyll pigments for photosynthesis.
- Sites of photosynthesis that use light energy to produce carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water.
Cell Wall
- Composed of cellulose, creating a sieve-like network.
- Protects and supports cells, contributing to the structural integrity of plants.
- It has multiple layers: primary and middle lamella
Vacuole
- Membrane-bound sac in cytoplasm containing cell sap.
- Maintains turgor pressure for cell rigidity.
- Tonoplast (partially permeable membrane) regulates passage of molecules.
