Study Notes
Take Off Run Available (TORA)
- TORA is the distance from the start of the takeoff run to the point where the runway surface is no longer guaranteed to hold the aircraft weight.
### Flight Planning for Public Transport Flights
- For flight planning, the captain of a public transport flight requires a TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) plus actual weather conditions.
### Right of Way for Converging Aircraft
- When two aircraft are converging on a collision course, the aircraft that sees the green light of the other aircraft does not have the right of way. Both aircraft must change course to avoid a collision.
### Alternate Destination Aerodrome
- The captain of a public transport flight must nominate an alternate destination aerodrome when required to conduct an instrument approach at the destination under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules). This is not required for all flights.
Take Off Conditions
- If the cloud ceiling is below the takeoff minima but the RVR (Runway Visual Range) is above the takeoff minima, the aircraft is not permitted to take off.
Preflight Checks
- The commander (captain) of the aircraft is responsible for ensuring that preflight checks are carried out.
Airport Markings
- A broken white (or yellow) line parallel to a continuous line signifies a holding point as an airport marking.
Certificate of Test Validity
- A Certificate of Test is valid until one year from the date of the test. The most recent test date is the one that determines the validity period.
Flight Time Limitations
- For every 100 flying hours accrued in a 28-day period, a pilot can operate for an additional 13 hours in a future 28-day period.
### International Public Transport Flights

- A hand-held microphone can be used for normal intercommunication above FL150 in controlled airspace.
Technical Log Book Entries
- Takeoff to landing times must be entered in the technical log book.
Anti-Collision Lights

- Only simulator flight tests need to be recorded in the personal flying log book, not all simulator session details.
### PILOT RATING
- A pilot who fails their rating test is unrated until a retake is passed.
### Flight Time Limits
- If a pilot has flown 927 hours in a 12-month period, they cannot fly any hours in the next 12-month period. The limit is 900 hours.
### Departure with Forecast Below Minima
- An aircraft will not be permitted to depart if the destination and alternate aerodromes are forecast to be below the RVR minima at the arrival time, unless the aircraft has additional holding fuel and is granted special permission by ATC.
### Commander's Duties on Public Transport Flights
- On a public transport flight with an additional captain designated “Commander", the commander must be at the controls during take-off and landing.
Right Of Way for Taxing Aircraft
- All aircraft, towed or otherwise, and other vehicles will give way to aircraft taking off or landing. Aircraft under tow will have right of way over other aircraft on the maneuvering area.

- The regulations governing pilots, flight engineers, and cabin attendant flight time limitations can be found in the Operations Manual.
### Captain's License
- A captain who fails to sign their flight crew license is liable to a fine of HK$5,000, and all "checks" conducted since the license was issued become invalid.
### Cabin Attendant Requirement
- A cabin attendant is not required on a regional flight with 19 passengers on board if the aircraft has 34 seats.
### Minimum Cabin Attendant Requirement
- On a flight from HKG to BAH with 325 seats, the minimum number of cabin attendants required is 7.
### Control Tower Flashing Lights
- On the maneuvering area, a red flashing light from the control tower means "Move clear of landing area."
### Blocking Exits on "Combi" Aircraft
- On a "Combi" aircraft, it is permissible to block an exit not required for use by passengers.
### Minimum Distance in Flight
- When flying over the sea, the closest distance that an aircraft can fly to a person, vessel, vehicle, or structure is 500 feet.
### Notification of Flight
- When an aircraft lands at aerodrome "A" and requires a replacement part, and the pilot is unable to obtain a Certificate of Release to Service at "A," the commander should notify the Chief Executive of the flight from "A" to "B" within 10 days.
### Injury to License Holder
- A licensed pilot who suffers an injury making them incapable of undertaking their duties under the license must inform the Chief Executive as soon as possible.
### Unserviceable Entry Doors
- An aircraft with 6 main entry doors can have up to one door unserviceable for dispatch, adjusting the number and position of passengers accordingly.
### Certificate of Release to Service (CRS)
