Study Notes
Becoming a Registered Civil Engineer (RCE)
- To become an RCE, candidates must pass a two-part exam.
- The first exam lasts 5 hours and covers:
- Mathematics
- Surveying
- Transportation Engineering
- Structural Engineering
- Construction
- The second exam lasts 4 hours and covers:
- Hydraulics
- Geotechnical Engineering
- To pass the entire exam, candidates must achieve an average score of 70% or higher.
- Candidates must also score at least 50% on each individual subject, regardless of their overall average.
- Each subject has a corresponding percentage for the final rating, with Mathematics, Surveying & Transportation Engineering, and Structural Engineering & Construction each contributing 35% and Hydraulics & Geotechnical Engineering contributing 30%.
Areas of Civil Engineering Specialization
- Civil engineers are in high demand in various industries, including finance, management consulting, and high technology.
- The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recognizes the following Institutes:
- Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI)
- Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI)
Civil Engineering Specializations
-
Structural Engineering:
- Analyzes and designs structures, including buildings, bridges, towers, tunnels, offshore structures, and more.
- Identifies structural loads and determines forces and stresses.
- Considers factors such as strength, stiffness, stability, aesthetics, cost, constructability, safety, and sustainability.
-
Transportation Engineering:
- Focuses on efficient, safe, and community-oriented movement of people and goods.
-
Bridge Engineering:
- Plays a crucial role in transportation systems.
- Controls traffic volume and weight.
- Often represents a significant financial investment.
-
Construction Engineering:
- Plans and executes designs from various engineering disciplines.
- Manages contracts, evaluates logistics, and controls material and equipment costs.
-
Coastal Engineering:
- Manages coastal areas, defends against floods, erosion, and designs ports.
- May also involve land reclamation.
-
Environmental Engineering:
- Treats chemical, biological, and thermal waste.
- Purifies water and air.
- Remediates contaminated sites.
- Focuses on pollution reduction, green engineering, and industrial ecology.
-
Geotechnical Engineering:
- Deals with the properties of soil and rock.
- Conducts subsurface investigations and testing.
- Designs foundations and earth structures (dams, levees, etc.).
-
Land Surveying:
- Establishes property boundaries.
- Lays out routes for infrastructure (railways, highways, pipelines).
- Positions infrastructure, such as harbors, before construction.
-
Planning:
- Involves public interest and major funding for both private and public projects.
- The planning phase can take several years.
Design Phases
- There are at least two stages in the design process:
-
Preliminary Design:
- Creates an outline of concepts, scope, structure, materials, construction methods, cost estimates, and timelines.
-
Final Design:
- Includes detailed designs for all structures.
-
Preliminary Design:
Basic Requirements of a Building
-
Doors and Windows:
- Provide access, light, and ventilation.
-
Floor:
- Provides working space for occupants.
-
Roof:
- Serves as the top cover and protects the building.
-
Steps, Stairs, and Lifts:
- Provide access between floors and levels.
- Lifts are designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities.
-
Finishing:
- Includes plastering, whitewashing, and distempering to create smooth surfaces.
-
Building Services:
- Encompasses water supply, sanitation, drainage, electrical systems, and fixtures (cupboards and showcases).
- Essential for building functionality.
Key Requirements of a Building
-
Dimensional Stability:
- Structural components should minimize deformation to maintain stability.
-
Resistance to Dampness:
- Buildings must withstand dampness to prevent damage and prolong their lifespan.
-
Resistance to Fire:
- Building materials should be fire-resistant.
-
Heat Insulation:
- Buildings should insulate interiors from excessive heat to maintain comfortable temperatures.
-
Sound Insulation:
- Measures to reduce noise from both indoor and outdoor sources.
-
Protection from Termites:
- Building materials should resist termite infestation.
-
Durability:
- Building components should be built to withstand the elements and last for many years.
-
Security Against Burglary:
- Safety features to deter theft and protect the building and its occupants.
-
Lighting and Ventilation:
- Adequate natural light and ventilation are essential for building occupants' wellbeing.
-
Comforts and Conveniences:
- These factors, such as appropriate grouping and integration of services, contribute to overall comfort and convenience.
Forensic Engineering
- Investigates engineering events, particularly disasters or failures.
- Often focuses on structural failures, analyzing their causes.
