Memory
- Memory is the persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of information.
Types of Encoding
- Semantic Encoding: encoding of meaning, including the meaning of words.
- Acoustic Encoding: encoding of sound, especially of words.
Long Term Potentiation (LTP)
- LTP is the strengthening of connections between neurons based on use.
- The more you use the connection, the stronger it becomes, and the more likely something will be remembered.
- Strengthening LTP: study things and then sleep.
Retrieval
- Retrieval is the process of locating and recovering information from memory.
- Example: short answer test.
Sperling's Test
- Flashed a group of letters for 1/20th of a second.
- Depending on the tone, participants could recall the letters with near perfect memory.
Short Term Memory
- Information is held for about 18-20 seconds.
- Can hold around 7 pieces of information.
Types of Memory
- Explicit Memory: general knowledge facts, also known as declarative memory.
- Implicit Memory: knowing how to do something, such as riding a bike, without conscious awareness.
Amnesia
- People with amnesia show impairments in forming new memories, but their implicit memory remains intact.
