Study Notes
Skeletal System
- The skeletal system consists of two types of connective tissue: bones and cartilage
- It provides a framework for the body, allowing for movement, protection of organs, and storage of mineral salts and fat
- The skeletal system performs several functions: supporting and protecting soft tissues, storing mineral salts and fat, and enabling blood cell production
Axial Skeleton
- Composed of the skull, vertebral column, thoracic cage, and hyoid bone
- Axial skeleton provides a central axis for the body and protects vital organs
Skull
- Composed of 8 cranial bones and 14 facial bones
- Cranial bones:
- Frontal bone: forms the anterior part of the cranial bones and the forehead
- Parietal bones (2): form the upper lateral wall of the cranial bones
- Temporal bones (2): form the lower lateral wall of the cranial bones and contain the inner and middle ear
- Occipital bone: forms the bottom (ventral) portion of the cranium
- Sphenoid bone: located in the middle and extending up the sides
- Ethmoid bone: fills in the remaining square of the floor near the front of the cranial bones
- Facial bones:
- Mandible: forms the lower jaw and holds the lower teeth in place
- Maxillary bones (2): form the upper portion of the face, between the eyes and the upper teeth
- Zygomatic bones (2): lie lateral to the maxilla and form the upper portion of the cheek
- Nasal bones (2): form the “bridge” of the nose between the eyes
- Lacrimal bones (2)
- Palatine bones (2)
- Vomer
Vertebral Column
- Composed of cervical (7), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacral (5 fused), and coccyx (4 fused) vertebrae
- Vertebrae consist of a large oval body and intervertebral discs that act as cartilage pads between adjacent vertebrae
- The vertebral column encloses and protects the spinal cord, supports the head, and serves as a point of attachment for ribs and muscles of the back
- Intervertebral foramina allow nerves to pass through and connect the spinal cord to various parts of the body
Thoracic Cage
- Composed of ribs, costal cartilage, and sternum (breastbone)
- Ribs are 12 pairs, with the first seven pairs attaching to the sternum directly and the remaining five pairs not attaching directly
- The liver and spleen lie medial to the ribs, and the final two pairs of ribs form a protective cover for the kidneys
This quiz covers the basics of the skeletal system, including its components, functions, and structures. Learn about bones, cartilage, and joints.
