Study Notes

Anatomy of the Trachea

  • Located on the right side of the neck, the trachea begins at the lower border of the cricoid cartilage (C6) and ends at the carina (T5) where it bifurcates into the right and left main bronchi.
  • The trachea is approximately 10-12 cm long and 1.5-2 cm in diameter.

Relation to Surrounding Structures

  • The trachea is situated anterior to the esophagus and posterior to the thyroid gland and the thyroid isthmus.
  • The trachea is also related to the common carotid arteries and the vagus nerve.

Blood Supply, Lymphatic Drainage, and Innervation

  • Arterial supply: bronchial arteries
  • Venous drainage: via bronchial veins to theozygos system of veins
  • Lymphatic drainage: to tracheobronchial and paratracheal nodes
  • Nerve supply: autonomic fibers from the vagus and its recurrent laryngeal branches, and from the sympathetic chain

Test your knowledge of the anatomy of the trachea and bronchi, including their structure, location, and relationships with other organs. This quiz covers the details of the trachea, bronchi, and their surrounding tissues. Assess your understanding of the anatomy of the respiratory system.
