Study Notes
Anatomical Position
- The standard anatomical position is:
- Body erect
- Feet slightly apart
- Palms facing forward
Regional Terms
- Specialized anatomical terms for body regions differ from everyday terms
- Terms always mean "pertaining to" a body region (e.g., brachial region for the arm)
Body Planes
- Plane: An imaginary flat surface or line along which a body part is cut for study
- Sagittal plane: Divides the body vertically into right and left parts; produces a longitudinal section (l.s.).
- Midsagittal (median) plane: Lies on the midline
- Parasagittal plane: Not on the midline
- Frontal (coronal) plane: Divides the body vertically into anterior and posterior parts; produces a longitudinal section (l.s.)
- Transverse plane: Divides the body horizontally into superior and inferior parts; produces a cross section (c.s.)
Directional Terms
- Superior (cranial): Towards the head or upper part of a structure/body (above)
- Inferior (caudal): Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure/body (below)
- Anterior (ventral): Towards the front (in front of)
- Posterior (dorsal): Towards the back (behind)
- Superficial (external): Towards or at the body surface
- Deep (internal): Away from the body surface
- Medial: Towards the midline of the body (inner side)
- Lateral: Away from the midline (outer side)
- Proximal: Closer to the origin of the body part or point of attachment to the body trunk
- Distal: Farther from the origin of the body part or point of attachment to the body trunk
- Cranial / Caudal / Dorsal / Ventral: These terms have different meanings when used with humans vs. quadrupeds
Body Cavities
- Dorsal cavity: Protects nervous system
- Cranial cavity: Contains the brain
- Vertebral cavity: Contains the spinal cord
- Ventral cavity: Houses internal organs (viscera)
- Divided by diaphragm into:
- Thoracic cavity: Contains the heart and lungs
- Abdominopelvic cavity: Includes the abdominal and pelvic cavities
- Abdominal cavity: Contains stomach, intestines, liver, spleen
- Pelvic cavity: Contains urinary bladder, reproductive organs, rectum
- Divided by diaphragm into:
Serous Membranes
- Thin, double-layered membranes separated by serous fluid
- Parietal serosa: Lines internal walls of cavity
- Visceral serosa: Covers organs
- Specific names depending on the structure they cover
Abdominopelvic Regions
-
Divided into 9 regions for anatomical study
-
The 9 abdominal regions are used primarily by anatomists.
- Includes right hypochondriac, epigastric, left hypochondriac, right lumbar, umbilical, left lumber, right iliac, hypogastric, left iliac
-
Divided into 4 quadrants for medical use
- Right upper quadrant (RUQ)
- Right lower quadrant (RLQ)
- Left upper quadrant (LUQ)
- Left lower quadrant (LLQ)
Other Body Cavities
- Includes:
- Oral cavity
- Nasal cavity
- Orbital cavities
- Middle ear cavities
- Synovial cavities
