Body Planes and Terms of Direction

  • Medial: Refers to a position closer to the midline of the body; in anatomical position, the little finger is medial to the thumb.

  • Lateral: Indicates a position further from the midline; in anatomical position, the thumb is lateral to the little finger.

  • Proximal: Describes structures closer to the center of the body; for example, the hip is proximal to the knee.

  • Distal: Pertains to structures further away from the center; for example, the knee is distal to the hip.

  • Anterior: Refers to structures located in front of the body.

  • Posterior: Refers to structures located behind the body.
