Study Notes

  • The Arab Revolution, led by Ahmed Urabi in 1879-1882, was a revolutionary movement against Tawfiq Pasha and foreign intervention in Egypt.
  • Urabi initially demanded military equality for Egyptian soldiers and the Egyptian army's rank and file, but was arrested along with his comrades, but was saved by a Coptic Egyptian soldier and received support from the Egyptian army.
  • Subsequently, he gained widespread popular support, leading him to confront Tawfiq Pasha and present the demands of the Egyptian people, resulting in a change of government and the creation of a parliament and the strengthening of the Egyptian army.
  • Tawfiq Pasha agreed to the demands after consultations with the English and French consuls. A new ministry was formed under the leadership of Muhammad Sharif Pasha Baroudi, with Urabi serving as his war minister.
  • After this, many political events occurred, such as the Incident of Ismailia, which allowed Britain to intervene militarily in Egypt and sent troops to Ismailia, but they were defeated and retreated. British forces then sent troops to the Suez Canal and reached Ismailia and fought the Battle of the Quassasins and the Battle of Tel el-Kebir, but Urabi and the Egyptian army suffered heavy losses.
  • Urabi and his comrades were arrested, and a sentence of execution was issued against them, ending the Arab Revolution.
  • The causes of Urabi's revolution, which took place between 1881 and 1882, were believed to be a response of the Egyptian soldiers to their leaders, the Turks, who did not want to promote them to higher ranks. The incident was known as the "Garrani Incident."
  • Ahmed Urabi (March 31, 1841-September 21, 1911) was a military commander and Egyptian leader. He led the Arab Revolution against Tawfiq Pasha and later held the position of Minister of War (Defense Ministry today).
  • Urabi was named in full as Ahmad Muhammad Urabi Muhammad Wafi Muhammad Ghunaim Abdullah al-Husseini. His father was called Sayyid Salim ibn Zayd, and they lived in the village of Heria, Sharqiyah Governorate.
  • Urabi was born on March 31, 1841, in the village of Heria, Sharqiyah Governorate, and was the second of four children.
  • Urabi learned the Quran from his father, who was a village leader, and under his tutelage, he became proficient in reading and writing as well as some accounting and administrative skills.
  • In the eighth year, Urabi asked his father to take him to Al-Azhar University, and his father agreed and sent him to the capital, where he stayed for four years and graduated with a degree in theology and some knowledge of jurisprudence and Quranic interpretation.
  • His father died in July 1848 due to a cholera epidemic at the age of 63, and Urabi was at the age of eight at the time.
  • Urabi was taken care of by his elder brother Muhammad, who inherited the family estate of 74 feddans and supported the family.
  • Urabi joined the military under the orders of Muhammad Sa'id Pasha to enlist the help of the sheikhs and notables in the army during his efforts to attain military equality between the Egyptians and the Circularians. Urabi enlisted in the army in December 1854 and began his military career as a simple soldier. With good fortune, he became a sergeant after four years in the service, and then rose through the military ranks.
