    Study Notes

    Aerospace Vehicle Inspections

    • Inspection intervals are prescribed in Mission Design Series (MDS) specific -6 TOs, technical orders, workcards, checklists, commercial manuals, or depot engineering data. Inspections should be concurrent to avoid scheduling conflicts.
    • Inspection concepts include periodic, phase, isochronal, Programmed Depot Maintenance (PDM), and aerospace vehicle manufacturer maintenance.
    • The Ground Procedures/Control Center (GP/CC) manages periodic, phase, and isochronal inspections to be done at the scheduled time or with approved waivers. GP/CC can adjust frequency or scope as needed. Scheduling deviations for periodic, phase, or isochronal inspections require PM approval coordinated with the owning Major Command (MAJCOM). PDM and manufacturer maintenance deviations require PM, Lead Command, and MAJCOM approval.
    • New inspection requirements, for systems and components, must be completed at the prescribed interval, regardless of current age. If beyond the interval, initial inspections are to be done as soon as possible, and subsequent done accordingly. Accessory item requirements are time-based per Chapter 6.

    Inspection Requirements

    • Each Program Manager (PM) determines the inspection concept, establishes a recurring maintenance cycle, and maintains scheduling flexibility for recurring maintenance. Recurring maintenance requirements are contained in MDS specific -6 TOs and/or inspection workcard decks (e.g., pre-flight, basic post-flight, thru-flight). Workcards can be self-contained if specified by the acquiring activity.
    • Inspection types include periodic, phase, isochronal, depot scheduled, and manufacturer inspections. Examples of periodic inspection concepts include Pre-flight (PR), Basic Post-Flight (BPO), Pre-Launch Inspection/Walk-Around, Combined PR/BPO, End-of-Runway (EOR), Hourly Post-Flight (HPO), Thru-Flight (TH), Periodic(PE), Quick Turn (QT), and Pre-Departure Service Check (PDSC).

    Isochronal Concept

    • The isochronal concept uses calendar periods to schedule inspections, determined by the PM with Lead Command input. The period is from last inspection completion to next scheduled start.
    • If programmed hours change, the inspection interval is adjusted as directed by the -6 TO. Adjustments are coordinated with the Lead Command.
    • MAJCOMs, with PM concurrence, handle scheduling exceptions due to extended downtime (e.g., depot maintenance). A detailed pre-approved request form for exceptions must be submitted.
    • Aerospace vehicles with codes DJ, DK, DM, or DO (AFI 21-103), awaiting depot input or undergoing Unscheduled Depot Level Maintenance (UDLM), do not count time toward the next isochronal inspection.

    Other Inspection Types

    • Programmed Depot Maintenance (PDM): Scheduled every 12, 24, 36, 48, 54, or 60 months, as specified for the system. PDM includes inspections requiring special resources such as those not normally available at operational sites. Time exceeding the prescribed cycle for PDM requires a Red Dash notation or Red X if over 90 days (refer to TO 00-25-4).
    • Aircraft Manufacturer Inspections: Use letter checks (A, B, C, D). A/B checks are minor and usually done at home station. C/D checks are major and usually at a depot facility. Timeframes are in flying hours or calendar days.
    • No-Fly Calendar Inspections: Include 30-day and 90-day inspections for periods of no flying. 30-day inspections require a BPO, and 90-day inspections require a BPO, operational checks (excluding landing gear), and lubrication.
    • Transfer Inspections: Refer to Chapter 8.
    • Acceptance Inspections: Performed on new, transitioned, and repaired aircraft, engines, and ground equipment prior to service, to ensure serviceability. Scope determined by -6 TO.

    Symbols and Their Use

    • Red X: Indicates unsafety, unserviceability, or non-airworthiness. Use when discrepancies require immediate attention, include special inspections, and time-change items.
    • Red Dash: Indicates an unknown condition, a potentially serious issue. Used when an accessory replacement, operational check, or scheduled inspection is due but cannot be completed immediately.
    • Red diagonal: Indicates no immediate danger. Usage includes urgent or routine safety modifications or forecast maintenance alerts.
    • Procedures for clearing and upgrading symbols are included, addressing cases where someone else has entered a Red symbol. Specific requirements for clearing Red X entries are given including if maintenance to correct a Red X discrepancy is needed by contract Field Teams (DFT/CFT).
    • Red W: Used for ICBMs only to indicate inoperability without affecting the successful launch.
    • Red C: Indicates contamination by chemical, biological, or radiological materials, and will never mean the aircraft is unsafe to fly. Cleared by the installation Bioenvironmental Engineering Office, using the correct corrective actions.

    AFTO Forms

    • Use AFTO Form 781 and variations for maintenance records.
    • AFTO Form 781A documents maintenance discrepancies (including preflight and postflight activities).
    • AFTO Form 781B records COMSEC equipment status.
    • AFTO Form 781C provides avionics information.
    • AFTO Form 781E tracks accessory replacements.
