Learning Outcomes
- Describe the surface of the thorax.
- List the organs in the thoracic cavity.
- Describe the blood supply of the thorax.
- List the muscles of the thorax.
- List the nerves that innervate the thorax.
- Describe some clinical cases related to the listed topics.
Thorax
- Located between the neck and abdomen.
- Houses major vessels, heart, and lungs.
- Functions as a conduit for structures from head, neck to abdomen, pelvis, and lower extremities.
- Specific functions include: protection, support, conduit, segmentation, breathing, and pumping blood.
Subdivision of Mediastinum
- Superior mediastinum: extends from the thoracic inlet to the transverse plane (T4).
- Posterior mediastinum: located behind the heart, below the transverse plane.
- Anterior mediastinum: anterior to the heart, below the transverse plane.
- Middle mediastinum: contains the pericardium, heart, and main bronchi.
Thoracic Cage
- Part of the axial skeleton.
- Includes thoracic vertebrae, 12 pairs of ribs, the midline sternum, and the costal cartilages.
Joints of Thoracic Cage
- Articulations between the ribs and thoracic vertebrae.
- Articulations between the ribs and the sternum.
- Articulation between the clavicle and the manubrium of the sternum, and the first rib
Muscles of Anterior Thoracic Wall
- Pectoralis major
- Pectoralis minor
- Serratus anterior
Intercostal Neurovascular Bundles
- Veins and arteries lie inferior to each rib, within the costal groove.
- They are deep to the internal intercostal muscles.
- Includes arteries and veins of the internal thoracic wall, perforating branches, and nerves.
Intercostal Nerves
- Anterior rami of the first 11 thoracic spinal nerves.
