Advanced Human Anatomy Bio 2032 - Fall 2024-2025 Cristina V. Dieni, PhD Phone: 942-421, ext 2248 Email: [email protected] Learning outcomes Describe the surface of the Thorax List the organs that are in the thorax cavity Describe the Blood supply of the thorax List the muscles of the thorax List the nerves that innervate the thorax Describe some clinical cases related to the listed topics The thorax is located between the neck and abdomen and houses the major vessels, heart, and lungs. It also serves as a conduit for structures that pass from the head and neck to the abdomen, pelvis, and lower extremities. Functions Protection Support Conduit Segmentation Breathing Pumping blood is divided into: Subdivision of Mediastinum The superior mediastinum extending from the thoracic inlet to the transverse plane, T4 The posterior mediastinum below the plane and behind the heart The anterior mediastinum below the plane and anterior to the heart The middle mediastinum containing the pericardium, heart and main bronchi. Planes of Reference Thoracic Cage Thoracic Cage is part of the axial skeleton. Includes: the thoracic vertebrae, the midline sternum, the 12 pairs of ribs, the costal cartilages Joints of Thoracic Cage Include articulations between the ribs and the thoracic vertebrae, articulations between the ribs and the sternum, articulation between the clavicle with the manubrium of the sternum and the first rib. Muscles of Anterior Thoracic Wall include: Pectoralis major. Pectoralis minor. Serratus anterior Muscles of Anterior Thoracic Wall The intercostal neurovascular bundles Veins and arteries lie inferior to each rib, running in the costal groove deep to the internal intercostal muscles The intercostal nerves are the anterior rami of the first 11 thoracic spinal nerves "Netter illustration from www.netterimages.com© Elsevier Inc.
