What is Science?
- Science is a process for understanding how the natural world works and how it came to be that way.
- Science is not about collecting facts, but rather a process of gathering information for scientific understanding.
- There is no absolute certainty in science, only degrees of probability.
- Scientific understanding can change over time with new observations and interpretations, and the development of new tools.
- New tools and technology can result in revisions of what had been accepted as fact.
Characteristics of Science
- Objectivity: Science strives to be objective, free from personal feelings, interests, and prejudices.
- Methodological Rigor: Scientific studies follow certain rules and procedures, ideally making the process as objective as possible
- Caution: Scientific studies strive to consider multiple potential outcomes, and accept the existence of scientific uncertainty
- Bias: Science must account for possible bias from the people conducting the science (e.g. gender, nationality, religion, politics, inherent interests) and the methods used.
