Lesson 9: Speak The Truth We are bound to be honest, why? Each man is created with the divine ability to be honest. God is the fullness of truth. Jesus said: "I am the Truth". Those who receive Jesus and live in Jesus are bound to be honest in their lives. Telling lies is a sin, why? Jesus said to Pilate that he came into this world to bear witness to the truth. It is the duty of Christians to bear witness to truth. All statements against truth are lies. Others have the right to know truth. To deny it is equal to telling lies. If we consciously speak against our knowledge and conviction for selfish motives, we are doing wrong. The seriousness of the evil (sin) in the lies will vary according to the seriousness of the matter and the circumstances. Still we should avoid even small lies. Telling lies destroy the authenticity of the person. When we state something against truth, especially in courts, it becomes false witness. It is mortal sin. What is the seriousness of copying in the exam? Copying is a sin against truth. Here, the student gives a false impression to the teacher that he had studied when he actually did not and thus gains undeserving marks. Both copying and helping to copy in the exam are equally sinful. An honest student will never copy in the exam. What are the evils against truth? Flattery- Flattery is the use of words in attributing certain virtues or talents, which a person, in fact, does not have and the act of encouraging and confirming the evil deeds of others. How does telling lies become a violation of rights? The moral problem in telling lies is the violation of one's right. Man has the right to get correct knowledge. When we tell lies, this right to know the truth is violated. When we tell lies and when we do not tell the truth at the right time this right is violated. When the right to know the truth is violated, social life becomes difficult. Hence, we must be truthful for a happy social life and to be justified before God. Lesson 10: Keep Up The Marital Purity What did Jesus say to elucidate the indivisibility of marriage? Marriage is a life-long relationship. It is more than a covenant between a man and woman. In marriage, man and woman becomes one in Jesus. Since God binds them, it cannot be broken. This is termed in indivisibility of marriage. " What God has united, let men not divide" Good families are the backbone of the church and society- illustrate. The couples enter into a sacred life through marriage. Total mutual commitment is their way to holiness. They give their bodies, mind and souls as a gift to the other. Hence, a third person should not enter between them. This is what the commandment 'Do not covet another's wife' indicates. This is a commandment to keep up marital purity. This commandment reminds us to love your life partner fully. St Paul reminds us that one who loves his life partner as one's own body, loves himself. The backbone of the Church and society is good families. Hence let the Christian couple build up the body of Christ -- the Church by being pure in their marital relationship. Lesson 11: Desire Not The Undeserving Explain in a few words that earning wealth is one's fundamental right. It is God Himself who has given man the ability to earn wealth. Each man has the right to earn wealth through rightful means and to make one's life secure for today and tomorrow. The right and duty to earn wealth for one's life through work or employment is God-given. When does earning of wealth become evil? The right and duty to earn wealth for one's life through work or employment is God-given. But is it a serious evil to earn wealth by unjust means and needlessly. The universe is created for the whole of humanity and it is sinful when a person seeks and cares only his own security and pleasure. What is evangelical poverty? The real spirt of poverty consists in Evangelical Poverty. It is the mode of life with trust in God's providence, not finding one's satisfaction in the abundance of material goods. Explain thrift and generosity. God is the true owner of wealth. Human beings are only the stewards of wealth. This connection leads a person to thrift. Thrift is the mode of action of a person who spends only the money that is necessary for his life and gives the rest of his wealth for the welfare of others. The number of persons who spend their wealth wantonly is increasing. God does not desire such a practice. The rich should have the realization that their wealth is God's gift. Generosity is a virtue that enables us to help the poor and to contribute to the eradication of poverty by realizing that we are responsible for the poverty in this world. The basis of generosity is the good will to sacrifice one's own comfort and help others in their needs. Only those who have the good will to share can be generous. The substance or core of the commandments is love. Commandments make it clear that is love that must lead / control human life. Jesus thought that the first and important commandment is to love God and the second commandment of fraternal charity is equally important. Love of God and love of our brethren are the two sides of the same coin. A Christian cannot ignore those who deserve love and compassion, why? A Christian cannot ignore those who deserve love and compassion. Every Christian should remember that all men are God's children and it is our duty to love and help all. We must express our fraternal charity through deeds. Acts of charity have a significant place in the life of a Christian. On the day of the last judgement, Christ will judge us on the basis of fraternal charity. Hence we must practice charity from an early age. It must begin in families, children should learn the primary lessons of love by loving their parents and brothers and sisters. In our schools, among our friends and in various circumstances of life, we must be models of love. What are the special features of the love of Jesus? There are certain features in the love of Jesus. It is a love without selfishness, It is a love that commits Himself for the service of others. It is a love that forgives even His enemies; it is a love without conditions; it is a sacrificial love, A love that leads everyone to God. How many deeds of mercy are there? Physical -- feed the hungry, Give a drink to the thirsty, Cloth the naked, Give shelter to the homeless, Visit the sick and the prisoners, Help the poor and the needy and Bury the dead. Spiritual -- teach the ignorant, Counsel the doubtful, Comfort the suffering, Admonish the sinners, Forgive offences, Bear wrongs patiently, Pray for the living and the dead. What must we do to experience heaven here, on earth? The features of the love of Jesus should be evident in our love too. Then only we would become His real disciples. We must be able to grow and persevere in love. If we can love like Jesus, we will be able to experience heaven here, on this earth. Lesson 13: The Precepts of the Church What is the difference between God's commandments and the commandments of the Church? The Commandments of God are for all. No one has the right to change them. But Jesus has given the authority to the Church to explain, interpret and teach them. Commandments of the Church are also called the precepts of the Church. The Church teaches the faithful various means to attain salvation. The important means for salvation are the worship of God, reception of the Sacraments and obeying the commandments. Along with that the church gives us certain precepts for the growth and preservation of the ecclesial community. How many commandments of the Church are there? Which are they? The precepts of the Church are basically 5. They are: Participate in the Holy Mass on all Sundays and other days of obligation. Do not do works that hinders us from keeping these days holy. Receive the Sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year and receive Holy Communion during Pascal season. Keep fast on the fixed days and avoid forbidden food during those days. Do not celebrate marriage on forbidden days or marry certain persons who the Church has forbidden. Give the share and contributions fixed by the Bishops for the subsistence of the Churches and priests. How are we to obey the commandments of the Church? The precepts of the church are basically five. These precepts of the Church have evolved through the centuries. The moral voice formed according to Christian faith is Christ conscience. Why is it necessary that we must form Christian conscience? Good conscience helps man, who does evil in spite of his desire to do good, to lead a life in goodness. Formation of good conscience is necessary for true Christian life. The first thing in the formation of good conscience is to discern what is good and what is evil. It is necessary to have training for this discernment. For us Christians, the Word of God and the teachings of the churchwill help us to get this knowledge What are the factors necessary to form Christian conscience? Get proper knowledge -- we must gain knowledge and training in human and Christian values. Thus we get knowledge to evaluate good and evil in all circumstances. Seek the assistance of the Holy Spirit -- We need the power of the Holy Spirit to discern good and evil, to choose the good and act accordingly. The gifts of the Holy Spirit will help us here.
