Sensory Alterations Humans have five basic senses Sight Smell Hearing Taste Touch The inability to see, smell, hear, taste, or feel are referred to as sensory alterations. 2 Copyright 2022 Assessment Technologies Institute, L.L.C. Three Common Sensory Alterations Sensory Deficits: a client has difficulty with one or more of the main senses Sensory Deprivation: a client lacks the ability to receive sensory stimulus perception Sensory Overload: a client receives stimuli at a rate and intensity beyond his/her ability to process 3 Copyright 2022 Assessment Technologies Institute, L.L.C. Vision Disorders Myopia: nearsightedness Hyperopia: farsightedness Astigmatism: a refractive error whereby the eye cannot focus light evenly on the retina, causing blurred vision or distortion Presbyopia: decrease in the ability to focus up close or with small print 4 Copyright 2022 Assessment Technologies Institute, L.L.C. Cataracts A cloudy area on the eye lens caused by proteins in the eye breaking down and clumping together Cause cloudy and blurry vision Make it hard to see well at night Sometimes cause double vision Colors appear faded and yellowing 5 Copyright 2022 Assessment Technologies Institute, L.L.C. Diabetic Retinopathy Affects blood vessels in the retina and can lead to vision loss and complete blindness Can advance and damage the optic nerve causing glaucoma Is the leading cause of blindness in adults 6 Copyright 2022 Assessment Technologies Institute, L.L.C. Glaucoma: Increased Intraocular Pressure Screening included as part of a regular eye exam Measured by noncontact tonometry or an applanation tonometry If the eye pressure is high or if the optic nerve looks unusual the doctor measures the cornea thickness using a pachometer 8 Copyright 2022 Assessment Technologies Institute, L.L.C.
