Introduction to Dentistry Course Introduction and Orientation Dr Hanadi Saud Lingawi (MSc Dent Rad, Mclin Dent Paeds, PhD) Course General Description The “Introduction to Dentistry” course is one of the required courses in the dental program to achieve a bachelor degree in dental surgery “BDS”. It is a one semester course that is designed to introduce 2nd year dental students to dental profession through providing an insight to dental terminologies, basic principles and dental care procedures provided by the various dental specialties. It is based on two main teaching methods; lectures and group discussions. What are the Course Objectives? To provide the 2nd year dental students with a multifaceted , unique introduction to the field of dentistry. To familiarise the students with dental terminologies To introduce the students to simplified models od dental treatment provided by different dental specialities. Paediatric Dentistry It is the specialty of dentistry that provides both primary and comprehensive preventive treatment and therapeutic oral health for infants, children through adolescence including adults with special health care needs Restorative Dentistry It is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with diagnosed, repairing and restoring damaged teeth through procedures such as fillings. Prosthodontics It is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or defective teeth using biocompatible able substitutes. These biocompatible table substitutes are such as dental crowns, bridges, partial and complete dentures…etc Endodontics It is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with diagnoses, prevention and treatment of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues. Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology Oral pathology is the speciality of dentistry that deals with the nature identification and management of diseases affecting the oral maxillofacial region. Oral medicine is the discipline of dentistry that identify and manage diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions, and investigate the causes, processes, and effects of these diseases. OM is also concerned with the oral health care of medically compromised patients, and with the diagnosis and non surgical management of medically related disorders or conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. Periodontics It is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of teeth or their substitutes. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) What is oral surgery? It is any surgical procedure performed in or around the mouth and jaws. What is Oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) ? A branch of dentistry that deals with the surgical treatment of of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face an neck. Family Dentistry It is the specialty of dentistry that integrates all the sciences of all dental disciplines to upgrade the standards of general dentist to become highly qualified dentists who can treat complex cases and provide quality dental health care in a primary care centre. Conclusion No matter which pathway one chooses, the dental graduate will join a proud profession, that is highly appreciated by the public.
