What are the Social Determinants of Health? “The primary factors that shape the health of Canadians are not medical treatments or lifestyle choices but rather the living and working conditions they experience” (Raphael et al, 2020, p.11) “The social determinants of health (SDH) are the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. These forces and systems include economic policies and systems, development agendas, social norms, social policies and political systems” (World Health Organization, 2020) “Determinants of health are conditions that are known to greatly influence health and include social, economic, physical and environmental health determinants and are collectively referred to as the Social Determinants of Health.
