**RELIGIOUS STUDIES** **WEEK 8: LESSON 22** **[GRADE 10]** **The Lamp of the Body** **Matthew 5: 15-16, 6 22-23** **Objectives:** At the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Explain what Jesus meant by Christians are "light of the world". 2. Discuss **THREE** ways people can demonstrate that they live godly lives. 3. Differentiate the actions of a hypocrite to a Christian's attitude of letting his/her light shine. **Vocabulary:** - **Hypocrite**: a person who pretends to have moral or religious beliefs, that he or she does not actually possess **Matthew 5: 15-16:** "You are the light of the world...no one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead he puts it on the lamp stand where it gives light to the entire house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they may see your good works and praise your father in heaven." **Matthew 6:22-23:** "The eyes are like a lamp for the body. If your eyes are sound, your body will be full of light; but if your eyes are no good, your body will be in darkness. So if the light in you is darkness, how terribly dark it will be." - The life of a Christian is expected to be a living example of the ability of God to transform and restore the life of a person. As such, Christians are expected to live their lives openly so others can see and want to be like them. - Jesus used the illustration of light to show how the Christian must live his or her life. The purpose of light is to illuminate its surroundings. Thus, it allows one to see where one is going, which prevents harm or injury due to hitting objects. - Jesus noted that it is a waste of time placing light under a bowl, because then you would not be able to see your surroundings. The purpose here is for Christians to shine bright, do not hide your Christian beliefs. By letting their light shine, others can see who and what they are, also they will be a constant guide to others, helping them to see the right way to go. This will also help prevent others from falling into the dark world of sin. - Jesus used the eyes to illustrate how important sight is. It shows us where to go. Blindness results in darkness which prevents the body from seeing the path to take. A heart that is filled with God's Word and love is one that is filled with light and it knows the way to go, this is spiritual sight. If your heart is dark, then you will not know the right way to go because you are not seeing the right path and you are blind in Christ. **Christian Duty** - Christians are to have a good character. They are to be known as one that has pure motives and a willingness to spread God's Word and love. They must be willing to help others and boldly share the joys of Christianity. When others see this, they will want to be a part of it and hopefully will accept Christ.
