LESSON OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Review the types of scale; 2. Convert map scale to distances on the ground; 3. Convert metre to kilometre; 4. Complete activity related to map conversion. Name three things that you remember about scales? CONVERSION If the scale of a map is 1 cm to 50 metres, convert 6 cm to the distances on the ground. If I cm = 50 metres then in order to find 6cm, you must multiply 6X50. Therefore, 6 cm would represent 300 metres on the ground. What would be 35 cm and 25 cm? ACTIVITY: WORKBOOK FOR YOUNG MAP READERS (Q. 3, P. 14-15) If the scale of a map is 1cm to 150 meters, convert the following lengths to distances on the ground. ▪ 8 cm 18 cm ▪ 4.5 cm 16 cm ▪ 15 cm 23 cm ▪ 20 cm 11cm ▪ 42 cm 9 cm CONVERTING FROM METRE TO KILOMETRE When converting from metre to kilometre, you divide by 1000. E.g. 5000 metres = 5 km 200m = 0.2 km Convert the following to km A. 350 m B. 70 m C. 3000 m ACTIVITY: If the scale of a map is 1cm to 50 meters, convert the following lengths to distances on the ground (Give your answer in Kilometres) 6 cm 22cm 14 cm 28cm 12cm 24 cm 30 cm 35cm 41 cm 44cm
