NPTEL online certification course on Automation in Manufacturing Dr. Shrikrishna N. Joshi Associate Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati Guwahati PIN 781 039 Assam, India Week 1: Introduction Lecture 2 Mechatronics 2 Outline ❖ Mechatronics ❖ Disciplines of mechatronics ❖ Mechatronics for replacement of mechanics: wrist watch ❖ Mechatronics based systems 3 Definition of Mechatronics ❖ Mechatronics is a concept of Japanese origin (1969) ❖ Application of electronics and computer technology to control the motions of mechanical systems. ❖ Greater flexibility, easier redesign, reprogramming, and ability to carry out automatic data collection and reporting ❖ Now, we use regularly various mechatronics based systems such as washing machines, food processing units, air-conditioners etc. at home. ❖ At workplaces, various utilities viz. computers, printers, automatic beverage vending machines, etc. are helping us to enhance our work efficiency. 4 Multiple disciplines of Mechatronics ❖ Multidisciplinary approach to product and manufacturing system design ❖ Involves application of electrical, mechanical, control and computer engineering to develop products, processes and systems with greater flexibility, ease in redesign and ability of reprogramming. ❖ It concurrently includes all these disciplines. 5 Disciplines of Mechatronics ❖ Mechanical Engineering: machines and mechanisms ❖ Electrical engineering: electric prime movers viz. AC/DC, servo motors ❖ Electronics engineering: micro processors sensors, actuators and control systems control engineering helps in the development of various electronics based control systems to enhance or replace the mechanics of the mechanical systems. 6 Contribution from computer engineering ❖ Development of software to control the hardware of a machine / mechanism ❖ Provide “user friendly” interaction and control of machines and mechanisms to the human being. ❖ Manufacturing of a product to create newer product designs – computer aided design (2D / 3D) Computer aided manufacturing simulations to plan the manufacturing activities which include materials and manufacturing resource planning, record keeping, market survey, and other sales related activities. 7 Mechatronics for replacement of mechanics with electronics Quartz Technology Mechanical watch/clock Replacement of mechanics SMART Devices 8 Mechanical watch/clock 9 Quartz Technology 10 SMART Devices 11 Mechatronics based systems ❖ Modern CNC based production machine tool The work table of a can now move in a step of few microns with high level of precision ❖ Domestic washing machines are now “intelligent” ❖ Four-wheel passenger automobiles: safety and comfort Air-bags, parking (proximity) sensors, antitheft electronic keys, comfort, entertainment, communication etc. 12 Summary ❖Mechatronics: definition ❖Disciplines of mechatronics ❖Mechatronics for replacement of mechanics: wrist watch ❖Mechatronics based systems 13 What we will learn in week 2: lecture 1? ❖ Definition of a system ❖ Building blocks of a mechatronics based system ❖ Development of an equivalent mechatronics based system 14
