ICT CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS ICT001 – PRELIM – WEEK 01 WHAT IS ICT? The term Information Technology (IT) was first used in the early 1980s to indicate the convergence of computer technology and communication technology. In the 1990s, the term Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was more widely used to replace IT – which is to give a greater emphasis on communication aspect. TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY #1) Communication Technology - refers to all equipment and programs that are used to process and communicate information. TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY #2) Content Technology - refers to a variety of devices and touchpoints that delivers and markets relevant, meaningful, and timely information. TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY #3) Computer Technology - this comprises of the available technology that are used in solving complex problems. DATA VS. INFORMATION Data are also known as raw facts, and is considered as the backbone of everything we do. Information – are data that has been interpreted so that it has meaning for the user. IMPORTANCE OF ICT The development of ICT has introduced four powerful worldwide changes that have altered the business environment. Business Globalization Transformation Knowledge Digital Economy Transformation IMPORTANCE OF ICT Globalization – the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale IMPORTANCE OF ICT Knowledge Economy – an economy in which growth is dependent on the quantity, quality, and accessibility of the information available, rather than on the means of production. IMPORTANCE OF ICT Business Transformation – ICT has made a great impact in transforming businesses by the use of collaborative work and teamwork through technological innovation IMPORTANCE OF ICT Digital Transformation – “going paperless” ICT ARCHITECTURE What do you mean by the word “architecture”? ICT ARCHITECTURE An ICT architecture serves as a broad blue print for acquiring, developing, implementing and integrating ICT in order to support the business functions and strategies of an organization. ICT ARCHITECTURE: EXAMPLE ICT INFRASTRUCTURE this supports and manages all ICT resources and ICT services in the organization. ICT RESOURCES This includes the following: a) Computer hardware – the physical equipment used for input, processing, storing and output activities b) Computer software – the intangible parts of a computer system c) Communication Technology – consists of both physical devices and software that links various computers located at various locations d) Data ICT SERVICES This provide means for utilizing all ICT resources available within the organization. Examples of ICT services are: – e-learning – e-commerce – knowledge management ICT MANAGEMENT This explains how the available ICT resources and ICT services are arranged, operated, maintained and managed. ICT STRATEGIC PLANNING This starts by getting a holistic perspective on what the organization aims to achieve and how it will do so. ICT ACQUISITION ICT acquisition is the process of obtaining ICT infrastructure. The acquisition issue is complex for various reasons, such as: – There is a large variety of computer hardware, communication networks and IT applications available; and – These computer hardware, communication network and IT applications keep changing over time ICT ACQUISITION PROCESS ICT OPERATIONAL PLAN The ICT Operational Plan is a clear set of ICT projects that will be carried out by the organization to support ICT Strategic Plan.
