(Source: Dictironary.com) Social responsibility is an ethical theory individuals are accountable for fulfilling their civic duty actions of an individual must benefit the whole of society a balance between economic growth and the welfare of society and the environment Social Responsibility can be seen as Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) Every individual has a responsibility for; solely to the individual (IPR) beneficial to society (ISR) Individual Personal Responsibility (IPR) family and friends (immediate circle) Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) responsible for actions that effect communities outside immediate circle neighbors, related organizations and the society (outside circle) Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) Our community is where we live the village the town the residential complex We understand the problems of our community and must solve the problems For examples:- 1. Keeping the streets clean 2. Organize events in the town or the village 3. Providing social services to children without parents or elderly people 4. Making donations for society causes (goods or money or online) for social, cultural or ecological causes Is ISR only about philanthropy? Philanthropy: the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. ISR is not restricted to act of charity only It should go beyond philanthropy; we should support issues affecting the society as Campaigner a person who works in an organized and active way towards a goal. Volunteer a person who works for an organization without being paid. Activist a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change. (Source: Dictionary.com) Responsibility leads to: Learning from our mistakes Respect from others Accepting the consequences Makes one feel good Taking control of our lives Responsibility as individuals ISR can be classified into 4 broad categories: 1. Economic responsibility 2. Social responsibility 3. Civic responsibility 4. Environmental responsibility 1. Economic responsibility: relating to economics or the economy. (Source: Dictionary.com) Responsibility towards the economy; income inequality unemployment prices of goods services etc. 2. Social responsibility: relating to society or its organization. (Source: Dictironary.com) Dealing with the problems of the society like old age pensions discrimination nepotism divorce problems etc. 3. Civic responsibility: relating to the duties or activities of people in relation to their town, city, or local area. (Source: Dictionary.com) Responsibility in promoting community activities voting rights respecting and following laws use of community resources etc. 4. Environmental responsibility: the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. the natural world, as a whole or in a particular geographical area, especially as affected by human activity. (Source: Dictionary.com) Responsibility towards preserving the environment preventing any harm or damage Corporate Social Responsibility “Corporate social responsibility is a commitment to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of our workforce and their families as well as the local community at large”. We can also say, “It is a concept whereby organizations take responsibility for their impact on society and the environment”. Types of CSR 1. Responsibility towards self 2. Responsibility towards employees 3. Responsibility towards shareholders 4. Responsibility towards customers 5. Responsibility towards State 6. Responsibility towards environment 1. Responsibility towards self Every corporate’s primary duty is towards increasing its organizational efficiency, attain growth, expansion, stability and thus earn profits. 2. Responsibility towards employees Employees are an integral part of any organization. The responsibilities of an organization are: providing a hygienic environment, fair and impartial treatment to all its employees, timely payment, health care, career enhancement. 3. Responsibility towards shareholders Responsibility of every organization: safeguarding the shareholders’ investment providing a reasonable return on their investment 4. Responsibility towards customers Responsibility of: maintaining high quality standards maintaining reasonable prices avoid malpractices like; hoarding and black-marketing 5. Responsibility towards State Utmost transparency in accounting statements the state is entitled to a share in the profits of the company Income Tax General Sales Tax 6. Responsibility towards environment Responsibility of the organization to contribute to the protection of environment, produce environment friendly products, taking care of industrial waste management, etc., ISR vs CSR 1. ISR is at the roots of CSR, because a corporate / organizations are run by individuals and hence determines the social responsibility culture it follows. 2. As CSR is being increasingly viewed as a tool to make organizations socially responsible so a greater need for ISR is expected. 3. If ISR becomes way of life CSR may be an automatic end result. Corporate Social Responsibility in Oman LNG A pioneer of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Oman, Oman LNG has an active investment portfolio which it divides among its Community Fund for projects within its host communities in areas close to its plant, its National Fund for projects spread across different regions and the Reserve Fund to ensure the sustainability of the fund in future. Strategic areas of our Social Investment Programme (SIP) are: Health Education Employment Skills & Local Enterprise Fishing-rods, not Fish Culture & Heritage Sports & Recreation Environmental Protection Emergency Responsiveness Reserve Fund Question: Divide the above areas of Oman LNG Social responsibility according the CSR categories discussed in the chapter? Social Media Responsibility Online Social Media is highly scalable and accessible how people discover, read and share news, information and content. transforms monologues (one to many) into dialogues (many to many) allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal, political, and business use Impact of Social Media users have freedom and unlimited access to the virtual space to communicate with anyone lack of public awareness related to ethics in social media users are blinded by the fraudulent news and activities on social media communication sharing information privacy using other’s work unethical use of social media causes the violation of individual privacy and impacts both physical and information security Social Media Ethics and Etiquette Social Media Ethics: the right ethic equals the right perception and the right thinking on 1. how to influence social media appropriately and 2. how to engage people in the right manner. Etiquette is a code of behaviour within the context of our society Social Media Etiquette: the right etiquette equals acting the right way using social media whenever you connect a social media network, you are joining a community appropriate time respect and kindness. Principles of social media ethics and etiquette Authenticity: people will respond positively if you are sincere Transparency: having hidden agendas will only count against you Communication: getting to know people as people and letting them get to know you Social Media Addiction Overuse of Social Media is called Behavioural Addiction psychological issues excessively concerned about social media overwhelming desire to use social media excessive time and effort to social media harming other important life areas leads to multiple interpersonal problems ignoring real-life relationships work or school responsibilities physical health undesirable moods.
