# Parotid and Submandibular Glands ## Parotid gland **Location:** * In the parotideomasseterica region * Bounded: * Anteriorly by the **ramus mandibulae** and the **masseter** and **pterygoid muscles**. * Posteriorly by the **sternocleidomastoid muscle**. * Medially by the **spatium lateropharyngeum**. **Structure:** * Has a **capsule** that extends into the adjacent structures, such as the **masseter** and **lamina superficialis fasciae cervicalis**. * Has **ducts** that travel through the gland. The main duct, the **ductus parotideus**, opens on the inside of the cheek, opposite the **second molar of the upper jaw**. **Important facts:** * The gland is supplied by the **facial** nerve. * The gland is responsible for producing saliva. ## Submandibular gland **Location:** * The greater part of the gland is located in the **trigonum submandibulare**, below the **mylohyoid muscle**. * The smaller part of the gland is located in the **regio sublingualis**, above the **mylohyoid muscle**. **Structure:** * Consists of **serous** and **mucous** cells, giving it a mixed secretion. * Has a **capsule** that is loosely bound to the gland. * Has the **ductus submandibularis** which extends through the **regio sublingualis** to the **caruncula sublingualis** on the underside of the tongue. **Relations:** * Bounded by: * **Laterally by the medial surface of the corpus mandibulae and the pterygoideus medialis muscle** * **Medially by the mylohyoid muscle** * **Superiorly by the anterior belly of the digastric muscle** ## Sublingual gland **Location:** * Located in the **regio sublingualis** **Structure:** * Consists of **serous** and **mucous** cells. * **Does not have a capsule** * Has the **ductus sublingualis**, which opens in the **regio sublingualis** on the floor of the mouth, next to the **opening of the submandibular gland**. **Important facts:** * The gland is **smaller than the submandibular gland**. * The gland has **no capsule.**
