What is a research protocol? Are they the same? What are the differences? Why, when, how and where to use them?. Proposals usually involve a template that has to be filled in and submitted to the funding body. §A proposal is meant to persuade your instructor, peers, or a grant-making committee, etc. 13 A research protocol clearly and plainly provides an overview of a proposed study in order to satisfy an organization's guidelines for protecting the safety of human or animal subjects who might be adversely impacted by the research. §A protocol is meant to detail a study's methodology to meet specified ethical norms for animal and human subjects Research Proposal/Protocol: purposes States the research question you aim to answer. Provides a structured, written working plan of the study. Encourages adequate consideration and planning of project detail before you begin. Provides co-investigators or peers with a living and dynamic document for contribution and early review prior to its completion. Allows research staff, whether at the same location or at multiple locations (in the case of a multi-centre study), to carry out the study in exactly the same way. 14 Research Proposal/Protocol: purposes Acts as a record and reminder for the research team and collaborators of the initial project aims, stated procedures and researchers’ duties and responsibilities. It enables stakeholders or concerning parties to monitor the progress of the project. It provides the basis for funding and/or human research ethics applications (including budgetary information). It provides a framework for resulting publications. 15 Research Proposal/Protocol: functions Roadmap of the proposed research project. Communication tool. Research project planning and management. Funding, contracting and granting an ethical approval. 16 Research Proposal/Protocol: components § According to Good Clinical Practice guidelines laid by WHO, the format/elements of Research proposal/protocol varies, but most will contain these elements: General information Rational and background information Follow up Data management and data management and statistical analysis Anticipated problems Project management Study objectives Study design Methodology Safety considerations Quality assurance Expected outcome of the study Dissemination of results and publication policy Expected duration of the project Ethical considerations Budget Supplementary material for the project Collaboration with other researcher or institutions or institutions Curriculum vitae of all investigators References 17 Research Proposal/Protocol: components § § § § No universally applicable and correct format. Certain “communication tasks” are common. Funding agencies/ institutions may have specific formats … STRICTLY follow specified format by your institution.
