## Lesson 11: The Vertebrates Vertebrates are animals that have a skeleton and a vertebral column. The world of vertebrates has a considerable number of animals. ### Activity: The Vertebrates #### I Observe, I Think Observe, think then answer the questions. - **Sardine** - **Cat** - **Lizard** - **Ostrich** - **Frog** - **Rabbit** - **Salamander** - **Seagull** - **Grass Snake** - **Clown Fish** Do all these animals have a vertebral column? Indicate the group to which these animals belong. These animals are not alike. To find out in what these animals differ, complete the following table by putting a cross in the appropriate box. | Name of the animal | Hair | Feathers | Bare skin | Joined scales | Four legs | Two legs | No legs | Lay eggs | Lungs | Gills | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | Sardine | | | x | | | | | x | x | x | | Cat | x | | | | x | | | x | x | | | Frog | | | x | | | x | | x | x | | | Rabbit | x | | | | x | | | x | x | | | Clown Fish | | | | | | | | x | x | x | | Lizard | | | x | x | x | | | x | x | | | Seagull | | x | | | x | | | x | x | | | Grass Snake | | | x | x | x | | | x | x | | | Ostrich | | x | | | x | | | x | x | | | Salamander | | | x | | x | | | x | x | | #### Place the animals with the same characters in the following boxes. | Box 1 | Box 2 | Box 3 | |---|---|---| | | | | | | | | | Box 4 | Box 5 | | |---|---|---| | | | | | | | | Each box represents a subgroup of vertebrates. Into how many subgroups can we classify vertebrates? Give a title for each box. - Box 1: Mammals - Box 2: Birds - Box 3: Fish - Box 4: Reptiles - Box 5: Amphibians Based on the preceding table, pick out the characters of each of the subgroups of vertebrates, to complete the given table. | Mammals | Birds | Fish | Reptiles | Amphibians | | ---|---|--- |---| --- | | The female breastfeeds her young which form inside the body of the mother (viviparous) | The female lays eggs and sits on them (oviparous) | The female lays eggs (oviparous) | The female lays eggs (oviparous) | The female lays eggs (oviparous) | ### Complete - Animals with a ...... are vertebrates. - Vertebrates are classified into ..... subgroups. - ..... and ..... ### III Indicate the subgroup to which each vertebrate below belongs. | Animal | Description | Subgroup | |---|---|---| | Leatherback Turtle | - Has a skeleton. - Its shell consists of thick and joined scales. | Reptiles | | Rabbit | - Has a body covered with hair. | Mammals | | Pigeon | - Has a body covered with feathers. | Birds | | Black fin tuna | - Has free scales. | Fish | | Toad | - Has bare leathery and bumpy skin. | Amphibians | ### IV Read the text then answer. The bottlenose dolphin and the great shark are two aquatic animals that live in marine saltwater. These two animals have some common characteristics: both have fins and one tail. The shark breathes through gills. Its skin is rough with small pointy scales. The dolphin's skin is smooth and rubbery, it breathes through lungs. The dolphin breastfeeds its young at least a year while the shark does not. - **a. Pick out from the text, the place of living of the two mentioned animals.** The place living of the two animals is marine saltwater. - **b. Compare these two animals by completing the Venn diagram below.** [Diagram showing two overlapping circles. Dolphin in one, Shark in the other, and both are labelled with the following characteristics: fins and one tail, live in marine saltwater.] - **c. Specify the subgroup to which each animal belongs.** - Dolphin: Mammals - Shark: Fish ### I Evaluate Myself I Indicate the subgroup to which each of the vertebrates below belongs, then underline in each bubble the information that justifies your answer. - **I fly like birds but my body is covered with hair. ** - **Subgroup: Mammals** - **I am an excellent diver. My wings serve me as oars. My feathers are waterproof.** - **Subgroup: Birds** - **I live in the sea. My skin is covered with small scales. I lay my eggs in the water and leave them among algae.** - **Subgroup: Fish** ### II Cross the intruder then justify. - **Crocodile** - **Rabbit** - **Hen** - **Carp** **Justification:** The intruder is Carp, as it is the only fish listed. The rest are all vertebrates. - **Frog** - **Toad** - **Duck** **Justification:** The intruder is Duck. The other two are amphibians. ### III Observe the document, read then answer the questions. The grass snake is a non-venomous snake with a cylindrical body. It breathes through lungs. It has joined scales. Active mostly at night, it is found in trees and around houses.
