It can be done through writing, speech, gestures (body language), symbols, or written communication. Communication is a continuous transmission of a message among two or more individuals the sender and receiver. No. Conflict is inevitable and does not reflect badly on you. People may believe there is always a winner and a lose in workplace conflict. This is not necessarily true. Both parties can come to an understand of each other’s position and move forward with a resolution. Aggressive or passive implies a motive which isn't ideal: with aggression you're trying to convince of your perspective, with passive you're trying to avoid conflict. The key to effective to effective communication is the development of problem solving and decision making skills School of Construction and the Environment 5 PIPING DEPARTMENT Communication Things to think about Always remember that most people find it difficult to receive feedback or constructive criticism, no matter what the intention. A negative group environment can harmfully impact the motivation of co-workers and reduce productivity. Use assertive language such as 'I feel…' and 'I think…', which takes responsibility for and explains exactly how you are feeling, rather than aggressive language such as 'You always…' and 'You…', which blames the other and escalates conflict. School of Construction and the Environment 6 PIPING DEPARTMENT Communication Things to think about Cultural differences that manifest in communication refer to the variations observed between people engaging in a conversation due to differences in their values, beliefs, norms, and behaviors. One can address these differences and communicate effectively by being more culturally sensitive. Communicating those intentions in an articulate and thoughtful manner increases the likelihood that your intentions will be well received. Remember: only you can speak accurately about your own intentions. Being a good talker does not guarantee you are a good communicator. Being a good communicator includes listening and appropriate and timely feedback. This is often referred to as “active listening”. (Push button to talk release to listen) Can be set to different frequency's Works without cell towers, emergency situation School of Construction and the Environment 11 PIPING DEPARTMENT Communication Equipment Mobile phone’s (Cell phones) Good for communication when used in developed areas (city’s) Can become expensive to operate (depending on contract) Can also communicate with texting May be prohibited to use on job School of Construction and the Environment 12 PIPING DEPARTMENT Communication Equipment Plant Phone (Land Lines) Usually used only in plant (may not access outside phones or be restricted to certain phone numbers) Hard wired in plant Used to talk to operators in mill/plant School of Construction and the Environment 13 PIPING DEPARTMENT Communication Written Written communication is the exchange of information, ideas, or messages through written language in the form of letters, emails, notes, and more. Examples of written communication include: Emails. Text messages. Blog posts. Business letters. Reports. There are times when written communication can be an issue. This can Proposals. occur in areas such as texting or email. Contracts. Job descriptions. The issue arises someone takes your text or email the wrong way. Its important to effectively communicate your thoughts in these situations to avoid misinterpretation. School of Construction and the Environment 14 PIPING DEPARTMENT Communication Body Language Examples Hand movements Facial expressions Note that body language will change depending on where you come from or what cultural background you have. For example: many cultures including France and a number of Latin American countries show approval by the thumbs up gesture. On the other hand, these same gestures can express disapproval in other cultures. In Greece, Iran, and Italy a slight upward nod shows “no”. Bulgarians nod up and down to indicate dislike. You will find these cultural differences everywhere.
