Science Revision 2.1 A solution is a special type of mixture that is made when one substance dissolves and mixes fully with another A solvent is a liquid A solute is a solid All solutions are transparent. This means you can see through them Opaque is the opposite of transparent. Opaque means you cannot see through it Dissolving needs two substances a solute and a solvent Melting only needs one substance a solute mass of solute + mass of solvent = mass of solution No mass has been lost. The mass has been conserved. Solubility is the ability of a substance to dissolve Physical Change is a change in the appearance Chemical Change is a change in the structure Dissolving is a physical change Carbon Dioxide is sometimes considered the solute The mass for the solution is equal to the total mass of the solvent and the solute 2.2 Mass can neither be destroyed or created Not all salts can dissolve in water A dilute solution means a small amount of solute dissolving into a large amount of solvent A concentrated solution is where it has the right amount of solute More particles of the solute are dissolved in a concentrated solution rather than a dilute Solution Soluble means that it can be dissolved in solvent Insoluble is the opposite of soluble, it means that it cannot be dissolved in solvent Saturated solution means that no more of the solute will dissolve anymore As the temperature increases the solubility of most solutes also increases 2.3
