Name: ________________________________________________________ Date: ________________ Unit 1 Study Guide Part 1: Steps of the Scientific Method Definition Example 1) 2) 3) What are the 3 necessary components of a hypothesis? 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) Part 2: Experimental Design A doctor notices that patients who take higher doses of a new headache medication seem to report faster relief than those who take lower doses. She wonders if increasing the dosage of the headache medication reduces the time it takes for patients to experience relief ? To test this, the doctor designs an experiment where three groups of patients are given different dosages of the medication: a placebo (fake pill), a low dose, and a high dose. After taking the medication, the patients are asked to record the time it takes for their headache to subside. The doctor collects data on the time it takes for each patient in the different dosage groups to experience headache relief. The results are then looked at to determine if there is a correlation between the dosage and the time to relief. a. What is the independent variable and dependent variable? ______________________________________________________________________________________ b. Identify the control group: ______________________________________________________________________________________ c. Identify the experimental group(s): ______________________________________________________________________________________ d. Is this a controlled experiment? How do you know? ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ Part 3: Types of data You are conducting a survey about student preferences in school. Identify whether each of the following survey questions would gather quantitative or qualitative data: a) "How many hours do you spend on homework each week?" ____________________________________ b) "What is your favorite subject in school and why?" ____________________________________ c) "How many students are in your math class?" ____________________________________ d) "Describe how you feel about your school lunch options." ____________________________________ Part 4: Characteristics of Life Humans perform many activities that reflect the characteristics of life. For each activity below, identify which characteristic of life is involved and explain: a) Eating a meal: What characteristic of life does this represent? How is it important for survival? ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ b) Healing a cut on your finger: How does the body’s response to injury demonstrate a characteristic of life? ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ c) Sweating on a hot day: How does this activity illustrate a characteristic of life? ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ Part 5: Graphing What are the five components of every graph? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Graph the amount of caffeine in the following popular drinks. Drinks Amount of Caffeine Coke 34 mg Mountain Dew 55 mg Chocolate Milk 5 mg Monster Energy 80 mg “Twister” just released in theaters!! Graph the instagram follower count of the two lead actors following the movies release.
