Unit 3- Geography Fundamentals Lesson plan What is Geography? -The study of the world and it's people. -How people interact with the world. Five themes of Geography- Main ideas of Geography -Region \- Absolute and relative location \- Place \- Relationships within places \- Movement Region -A part of the earth that has one or more common characteristics. \- Can be any type of characteristic- does not have to be political \- A way of describing spatial areas -examples: Mountainous Regions, lowlands, physical location of an ethnic group, areas of natural resources, oceanic or atmospheric occurrences, etc. Absolute and relative location -absolute location- the actual physical location of something via Latitude and Longitude. -relative location- the location of a place or thing relative to some known landmark. -relative location is used by everyone-absolute location is under generally by professionals- navigators, meteorologists, pilots, ship captains, etc. Place -A particular location or region -The physical and human characteristics of a location \- generally concerning change resulting from human interaction Relationships with Place \- How the place changed due to humans- why? How? When? Who? \- Transportation, economic activities, construction, irrigation, population vs landforms Movement -How and why places are connected -Movement of people, things, and information Connection -Region is an area- place is specific -A place has a location and a special character that comes from the environment and the way people live -People influence place- place influences people -Places and their people influence each other Oceans and Continents of the World -Continents -North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica -Oceans -Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Southern (Antarctic), Indian -Seas -A sea is a part of an ocean where it meets land or is partially enclosed by land -examples- gulf of mexico, Mediterranean sea, sea of japan, philippine sea, bearing sea, etc. There are many.
