U1 Energy Force and Motion Students must create index cards with words and definitions. Optional extra credit. Students can earn five extra credit points on the U1 Exam if completed and turn in on exam day. Vocabulary on side Definition on the other side Force—A push or a pull that one object exerts on another object with or without direct contact (e.g., friction, gravity). See also balanced forces and unbalanced forces. Friction—A force that opposes motion through direct contact. Unbalanced forces—Forces that are unequal in size and may or may not be opposite in direction. See also balanced forces and forces. Acceleration—The rate at which velocity is changing. The change may involve an increase or decrease in speed and/or a change in direction. The change may be positive or negative. Net force—The sum of all the forces acting on an object. When forces are balanced, the net force is zero and the object’s motion will remain the same. When forces are unbalanced, the net force is nonzero, and the object’s motion will change. Speed - Speed is a measurement of how fast an object is moving. It is the rate or unit of time at which a moving object covers distance. A fast-moving object covers a large distance in a unit of time. A slow-moving object covers a small amount of distance in the same unit of time. An object with no movement or at rest has zero speed. Velocity - A car traveling East at a low speed has low velocity. Its speed is increased as it continues to travel in the same direction. It now has a higher velocity. Position - A position is a specific point in space. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigation device. It can accurately determine one’s position anywhere in the world. A GPS in a car can be used to navigate to a destination. Motion - a change in the position of an object compared to another object (related term: move, movement)
