TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT /ˈkɒɡ.nɪ.zənt/ Cognizant /ˈkɒɡ.nɪ.zənt/ adjective Definition: understanding or realizing something We should be cognizant of the fact that every complaint is not a justified complaint. Learning Objectives a. Correctly determine the different types of speech contexts based on provided scenarios. b. Demonstrate suitable verbal and non-verbal behaviors for a specific speech context through a 'Watch and Act' activity (Written Work 2). MOTIVATIONAL ACTIVITY Scene 1: A person talking to themselves Scene 2: Two people having a conversation over the phone Speech Context Speech Context is the environment in which the speech takes place and how the message is relayed. It can be classified into intrapersonal and interpersonal. Intrapersonal This refers to communication that centers on one person where the speaker acts both as the sender and the receiver of the message. Intrapersonal Example: You spend the night thinking and analyzing why a student from the other class talked to you on the way home, and you decide it probably meant nothing. Intrapersonal Example: You feel happy while thinking about how your teacher appreciated you for submitting your project your project before the due date, and you reflect on why you feel this way. Types of Intrapersonal Communication 1. Internal discourse involves thinking, concentration and analysis. Psychologists include both daydreaming and nocturnal dreaming in this category. Examples: Prayer, contemplation, and meditation. Types of Intrapersonal Communication 2. Solo vocal communication includes speaking aloud to oneself. Interpersonal Interpersonal Communication are classified into: Dyad Small Group Public Mass Communication Types of Interpersonal Communication 1. Dyad Communication - This refers to communication that occurs between two people. Types of Interpersonal Communication 1. Dyad Communication Examples: You offer feedback on the speech performance of your classmate. You provide comfort to a friend who is feeling down. Types of Interpersonal Communication 2. Small Group - This refers to communication that involves at least three but not more than 10 people engaging in face-to-face interaction, working to achieve the desired goal. Types of Interpersonal Communication 2. Small Group Examples: You participate in an organizational meeting that aims to address the concerns of your fellow students. Public - This refers to communication that requires you to deliver or send the message before or in front of a group. Mass Communication - This refers to communication that takes place through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, internet, and other types of media. Types of Interpersonal Communication Example: You are a student journalist. You articulate your stand on current issues through the school’s newspaper. How can you improve your Interpersonal Communication Skills? Attend workshops or online classes. Seek out opportunities to build relationships. Observe other positive interpersonal interactions. Seek out mentorship. Set goals.
