State of Nature: Everyone has a right to everything. Natural Rights: Rights to life, liberty, and property. Sovereign: Ruler who has total authority over the people. Social Contract: An agreement between the people and the government. Why do people create government? Governments are created to bring structure to society that promotes the well being and prosperity of its members. What’s the purpose of government? The purpose of government is to create a stable and just society where individual can thrieve and purse their goals. Thomas Born 1588 was an English scholar and philosopher Hobbes Believed before there were governments people lived in a state of nature. He was one of the first to discuss the idea of a Social Contract. Wrote a book called “Leviathan” explaining how governments should be. Hobbes believed that a single Sovereign is the best way for government. John Locke Born in 1632, was a doctor then became a philosopher and political scientist. Locke believed in Natural Rights that human beings share. Locke Believed without government it could lead people into a State of Nature. Assignment: Read the material and finish the worksheet.
