ARCH 516 – TROPICAL DESIGN ARCH 516 - TROPICAL PREPARED BY: AR. IAN CARLO UMALI TROPICAL DESIGN URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT This is a results from cities that have very little greenery and very many concrete surfaces. The city will have 2 to 3 degrees Celsius higher temperature than that of the surrounding suburbs and countryside. Figuratively, it forms an “island” of hotter land, ARCH 516 - TROPICAL while being surrounded by cooler land in the city outskirts. PREPARED BY: AR. IAN CARLO UMALI TROPICAL DESIGN It is the creation of choices at the beginning of a project, the evaluation of choices during the design process, the making of choices with the owner, the documentation of choices on drawings, and the implementation of choices through construction. A methodical exploration of green design is structured by working “from the outside in,” from the community and site, through various layers of the building envelope, and proceeding to examination of the green aspects of lighting, heating, and cooling ARCH 516 - TROPICAL CONTEMPORARY MODERN TRADITIONAL PREPARED BY: AR. IAN CARLO UMALI TROPICAL DESIGN Related topics are explored, including water conservation, safeguarding indoor environmental quality, material conservation, and renewable energy The planning, design, and construction fields have been swept up in a dynamic discussion of sustainability and green buildings Sustainability is about the promises of things that will last—buildings with long and useful lives, forms of energy that are renewable, communities that endure. Its building rating system is a goal is to substantially tool to measure, verify and reduce the environmental monitor performance of buildings above and beyond impact of buildings, while existing mandatory building providing a healthy and environmental environment within regulations and standards buildings. LEED (Leadership in Energy A structure and the and Environmental Design) application of processes is the world's most widely used green building rating that are environmentally system. PREPARED BY: AR. It are expected at a certain place changes day to day over a number of years Includes sunshine, rain, cloud Includes precipitation, cover, winds, hail, snow, sleet, temperature, humidity, freezing rain, flooding, blizzards, sunshine, and wind velocity, DEFINITION ice storms, thunderstorms, phenomena such as fog, frost, steady rains from a cold front or and hail storms over a long warm front, excessive heat, heat period of time. waves and more. Water vapor is the gaseous state of water and is invisible. Humidity indicates the likelihood of precipitation, dew, or fog. Higher humidity reduces the effectiveness of sweating in cooling the body by reducing the rate of evaporation of moisture from the skin. This effect is calculated in a heat index table or humidex. TROPICAL CLIMATE those regions where heat is the dominant problem, where the annual mean temperature is not less than 20 degrees TROPICAL DESIGN This is concerned with countries where discomfort due to heat and humidity are the dominant problems. Tropical Design is applicable to Tropical, Sub-Tropical and Equatorial Climates covering the Southeast Asian Countries ARCH 516 - TROPICAL PREPARED BY: AR. IAN CARLO UMALI TROPICAL DESIGN DIFFERENCE IN SUSTAINABLE AND TROPICAL ARCHITECTURE SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE TROPICAL ARCHITECTURE architecture that seeks to minimize the negative It is all about achieving thermal comfort through the use of environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and passive design moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space and the ecosystem at large. ARCH 516 - TROPICAL PREPARED BY: AR. IAN CARLO UMALI TROPICAL DESIGN ENVRONMENTAL CHALLENGES Air and water pollution resulting from fossil fuel use, fallout from nuclear power plant accidents, and the incipient and potential devastation of climate change all point to a critical need to reduce energy use Human illness resulting from exposure to toxic chemicals compels us to re- examine their intensive use, especially in building materials ARCH 516 - TROPICAL PREPARED BY: AR. IAN CARLO UMALI TROPICAL DESIGN GREENHOUSE GASSES The major cause of climate change is the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) produced by human activities, such as deforestation, changes in land use, and especially the burning of fossil fuels Greenhouse gases, primarily water vapor but including smaller amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). These are emissions that rise into the atmosphere and act as a thermal blanket, absorbing heat and reemitting it in all directions The downward portion of this re-radiation is known as the greenhouse effect and serves to warm the Earth’s surface and lower atmosphere to a life-supporting average of 59°F (15°C). Without this natural greenhouse effect, life on Earth as we know it would not be possible. ARCH 516 - TROPICAL PREPARED BY: AR. IAN CARLO UMALI
