TAKING CLIENT’S BODY MEASUREMENT Taking body measurement is an important step in sewing clothes for you and for others. Much of the success in garment construction depends on accurate measurement. Without the right measurement, the results you get may not be accurate. Standards for Taking Body Measurement When measuring, wear undergarments or bodysuit. Using measuring tape that does not stretch. Tie your natural waistline with a cord around it. Push the tape very close, but not too strongly. Ask the subject in stocking feet to stand in a comfortable, upright position. When taking girth or circumferential measurements, insert two fingers to serve as allowances. List all measurements correctly on a notebook. Tape measure – is a flexible tape with metric and English measurement. Pen / Pencil – is a common writing instrument Horizontal Measurement Circumferential Measurement Vertical Measurement The measurement is taken from the left of the figure to the right. taken from one shoulder point/ bone to another taken from tip of the bust to another The measurement is taken around the body. taken around the fullest part of the bust measurement taken around the natural waist taken around the arm hole is taken around the hip level where the buttocks are fullest Upper Arm Girth – taken around the fullest part of the arm in line with the armpit Lower Arm Girth or Sleeve Width – taken around the arm 2” or 3” below the armpit The measurement is taken from the top of the body figure to its base. measure from base of neck passing back to waistline. taken from base of the neck passing over the fullest part of the bust down to waistline taken from base of neck down to the tip of the bust PERFORMANCE TASK #2 Personal Measurement Chart Name of Client:______________________________________________ Date Measured:____________________
