Household workers perform a variety of household service for an individual or a family: from providing care for children and elderly dependents to housekeeping, including cleaning and household maintenance. **Household Workers' Ethical Responsibilities to Colleagues** **1. Respect-** household workers should treat co-workers with respect and should foster accurately and fairly the qualifications, views, and obligations of co-workers. **2.** **Confidentiality-** household workers should respect confidential information shared by co-worker in the course of their working relationships. **3. Consultation**- household workers should seek the advice and counsel of co-workers whenever such consultation is in the best interest of clients. **4. Sexual Relationships-** household workers should avoid engaging in sexual relationships with co-workers when there is potential for a conflict of interest. **5. Sexual Harassment**- household workers should not sexually harass co-workers, this includes sexual advances, sexual solicitation. Request for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. **6. Impairment of Colleagues**- household workers who have direct knowledge of a social work colleague's impairment that is due to personal problems, psychosocial distress, substances abuse, or mental health difficulties and that interferes with practice effectiveness should consult with that colleague's when feasible and assist the colleague in taking remedial action. **7. Incompetence of Colleagues**- household workers who have direct knowledge of a household work colleague's incompetence should be consult with the colleague when feasible and assist the colleague in taking remedial action. **Desirable Traits of a Household Workers** 1. **Loyal**- Follows clientele's rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 2. **Trustworthy**- A person can prove his/her trustworthiness by fulfilling an assigned responsibility and as an extension of that, not letting down expectations. 3. **Honest**- performs his/her job's duties with accuracy. 4. **Responsible**- performs his/her job's duties in a manner demonstrating that he/she understands his/her job's goals, duties and job description. 5. **Industrious**- Consistently exceeds job description expectations. 6. **Respectful**- Shows respect for a customer's authority and responsibility. 7. **Cooperative**- cooperates with other employees to achieve common objectives. 8. **Flexible**- willing to change how he/she performs his/her job as his/her job's responsibilities change. 9. **Decisive**- Exercise sound decision making skills when needed. 10. **Punctual**- It is the characteristics of being able to complete a required task before or at a previously designated time. - Often used synonymously with "on time". **Duties and Responsibilities of a Household Worker** - **Household worker-** anyone you pay to provide domestic services in your household. - **Cleaning-** This involves cleaning in assigned certain areas in the house or specific tasks such as daily cleaning or deep cleaning. - **Child and Elderly care-** This is the task of taking care of children from infant through adolescent. - Elderly member of the household may also need a domestic worker's care. - **Cooking**- Prepares the family's meals. - **Shopping**- It involves keeping groceries stocked in the pantry and buying household items. - **Laundry**- Do laundry daily or prepare a schedule to do it. - **Child Care-** In caring for infants and toddlers in the house, the housekeeper must be trained in first aid and CPR with smaller children, picking the child up from school and transporting them to after school activities for older children. **Uniform. Equipment, and Paraphernalia of a Household Worker** 1. **Apron-** a garment covering part of the front of the body and tied and the waist, for protecting the wearers clothing. 2. **Housekeeping shirt and pants**- outer protective garments that cover the body. 3. **Gloves**- used for protecting the hands from cuts, burns and other related incidents. 4. **Protective mask**- used for protecting the mouth and nose from inhaling dust and chemicals while working. 5. **Hand towels**- used for wiping and drying wet hands. 6. **Long sleeves**- used for covering the arms to protect it from heat, dust, and insect bite. 7. **Protective Gown**- used for protecting the dress from dirt. 8. **Protective shoes**- used for protecting the feet from any harm. 9. **Hairnet**- is used to prevent the hair from falling while at work. - **Personal Hygiene**- the comprehensive cleaning of and caring for the body. - **Paraphernalia**- Miscellaneous articles, especially the equipment needed for a particular activity. - **Nanny** -- A nanny is someone who is fully invested in a child's development and well-being. - **Babysitter**- someone who temporarily cares for children on behalf of the children parents or guardians. - Caretaker- a person employed to look after a public building or a house in the owner's absence. **IV.
