Person are equal but uniquely original AUTHENTIC HUMAN FREEDOM -the freedom from everything that opposes our true self-becoming with others. - rooted in reason and will -Imago dei IMPEDIMENTS OBSTACLES TO AUTHENTIC HUMAN FREEDOM Biological- abusive use of substance Phycological- prejudice, judgement, bias Social Pressure- economic, political, cultural obstacles THREATS THAT COME FROM OUTSIDE OF HUMAN PERSON Subhuman living conditions, inhuman working, conditions, exploitation THREATS THAT COME FROM WITHIN THE PERSON Ignorance, uncontrolled passion GREATEST OBSTACLE IS SIN As task- Strive to overcome obstacles As process- Gradual growth to authentic freedom 2 LEVELS OF FREEDOM 1. Freedom of self determination (basic or inner freedom) Acknowledges limits but strives to go further possible 2. Freedom of choice Ability to choose among options Freedom is not choosing what we want, rather by choosing on what is good. CONSCIENCE Person moral faculty Ours and God’s voice Con(with) Science (scienta= Knowledge) 3 Senses of Conscience 1. As capacity- tendency to do good 2. As a process- the process of discovering the good 3. As Judgement- “I must do” in particular situations CONSCIENCE SUPER EGO Voice of God living with us Ego of another person Which urges us to love God, ourselves Follow and do these things just to and our neighbors impress someone or not lose someone you love. CATEGORIES OF CONSCIENCE 1. Certain conscience - When without any prudent fear. It decides the act is either lawful or unlawful - Has no doubt in their conscience Correct or true conscience- conforms to what is objectively right. - “A learner saw that a college student left their phone, so he ran after them” Erroneous Conscience- conscience errs because of false principles Lax Conscience- conscience is incline to judge a thing truthful when infact is in sinful. Example: A young teacher want to be close to his students, so he decided to go out and drink the night away! Scrupulous conscience- opposite of lax where in the good, they think that it is evil. Example: A girl went to the priest and ask for forgiveness because she reads harry potter. She believes it s against the church because of its witchcrafts and wizards stuff. 2. Doubtful Conscience- unsure of one’s moral judgment Example: Before submitting the grades to the registrar, she notices that a student failed an exam. She felt bad. She wants her to pass however she did not pass her tasks. She was perplexed. AUTONOMY OF CONSCIENCE STA: The individual must follow their conscience since the one that will judge them is God DIGNITATIS: person is bound to follow their conscience; however, they are not forced to act in the manner contrary to their conscience. IGNORANCE 1. Invincible ignorance- moral subject is nor responsible for the erroneous judgement/ not culpable 2. Vincible ignorance- culpable for the evil that commits RATIONALIZATION- Making evil action acceptable SIN AND GRACE Sin- Offense of reasoning LEVEL OF TEMPTATION 1. Sensual desire – basic needs, nature of a person 2. Desire of power- the desire to possess everything 3. Desire of fame- obsessed in making everyone like us BIBLICAL RESPONSES Old Testament -look upon as the transgression of Gods law and will - forgetfulness and turning away from him New Testament - Ungrateful desertion of the Lord - Offense against love Roman Catholic Church Enslaves us Sickness Addiction SIN IS A FAILURE OF LOVE TYPES OF SIN 1. Original sin- inherit from original parents 2. Personal sin- Individual acts committed Venial- does not involve human freedom (lighter) Mortal sin- Graver sin 3. Social sin- structure that attack basic human rights and dignity GRACE - Gift of God himself (Love) 1. Sacramental Grace- Baptism 2. Actual grace- perform actions 3. Healing grace- divine assistance that brings healing, comfort, peace 4. Illuminating grace-divine understanding and insights that God provides 5. Grace of state or apostolates- support of individuals to fulfil roles within the church 6. Special grace- specific gifts or divine assistance granted by God to individuals for particular purposes, often related to their vocations or ministries 7. Other grace
