THE GLOBAL ECONOMY The United Nations was established on October 24, 2 1945 in San Francisco, California UNITED NATIONS EIGHT MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS 3 □ Among the eight millennium development goals of United Nations, eradication of poverty and hunger ranked first. □ According to UN (2015), extreme poverty is a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education, and information. 4 □ is a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society. It means not having enough to feed and cloth[e] a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, not having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living on marginal or fragile environments, without access to clean water or sanitation.” 5 □ The UN defines extreme or absolute poverty as living on less than $ 1.25 a day. □ The organization aims to eliminate extreme poverty for all people by 2030. 6 □ The UN (2015) reported that 836 million people still live in extreme poverty but that is down from 1.9 billion, so there is success or at least a lot of progress. The World Bank predicted that by 2030, the number of people in extreme poverty could drop to less than 400 million. 7 □ In the Philippine context, a person is officially living in poverty if he/she makes less than 100, 534 pesos a year, around 275 pesos a day. This is called the poverty line or poverty threshold. □ The most recent data posted by PSA indicates that a Filipino family of 5 is living in poverty if a household makes less than 13, 873 per month. 8
