He visited them and supervised their effort He even secured for them a home near his own 35 On June 24, 1680 he asked the teachers to take their meals at his home 12 months later, he asked them to live with him in his family home Because of this decision, his relatives complained and he was compelled to leave his home "I must do the work of God, and if the worst should come to pass, we shall have to beg alms." 36 37 Established On June 24, 1682, a community together with his few followers, lived in an of brothers old house in Rue Neuve This date may be called the foundation date for the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools The house in Rue Neuve became the 1st Mother House of38 the Institute. Year 1684 – John Baptist gave all his money to the poor that he might be poor in spirit like his followers May 28, 1684 - John Baptist De La Salle and twelve others made their first solemn vow of obedience. With this vow came the title “Brothers of the Christian School” 39 October 8, 1691 – St La Salle opened the novitiate or religious formation house in Vaugirard. -Here they lived a life of extraordinary penance and recollection -It was in this house that they pronounced the heroic vow of Association, meaning they promised to live together and maintain their schools even if they have to beg and live on bread alone 40 HEROIC VOW - November 21, 1691 We promised to do all we could to maintain the existence of the Society of the Christian Schools “even if there remained only 3 of us in the said society, and we were obliged to beg and live on bread and water alone. ▪ John Baptist DE LA SALLE, ▪ Nicolas Vuyart ▪ Gabriel Drolin 41 To reveal the real beauty of a diamond it has to be polished by fire…with fire…. From 1702 the founder began to endure a long period of trial, aggravated by persecution on the part of certain ecclesiastical authorities. In 1703 one of his most trusted disciples, Nicolas Vuyart, treacherously deserted him. For the next ten years the holy founder was engaged in a series of struggles for the preservation of his institute, in the course of which his name was attacked, and justice denied him before the civil tribunals. 42 43 After choosing Bro. Bartolomew as his successor, John spent the remaining of his days in self-effacement, mental prayers, obedience and mortification. He died in Rouen on Good Friday, April 7, 1719.
