There are nine volcanoes in Batanes, of which two are considered active. Its territorial waters of 4,500 square kilometers is around 20 times more than its land area of 230 square kilometers. It is the first Spanish Catholic Church ever built in Batanes. Built in 1783, Basco Cathedral is probably the oldest church in Batanes. Vayang One of the beautiful spots in Basco and a so-called heaven on earth. One can have a spectacular view of the South China Sea and the western part of Basco. Itbayat and other islet north of Bataan can also be seen from this place. Nakamaya Burial Grounds The site of the boat -shaped burial markers of ancient Ivatans. This kind of burial marker can only be found in Batanes and thought to be similar with the sites in Europe where Viking kings once dominated. The main town’s source of drinking water comes from the spring in Mt. Iraya. This mountain is also a home to Batanes pit viper, an arboreal snake found only in Batanes. At foot of Mt. Iraya is the Basco Airport. Vahay ni Dakay or House of Dakay. San Carlos Borromeo Church It is a UNESCO World Heritage Building. This house is one of the houses that survived a Declared by the National big earthquake on September 13, 1918 which Museum and the National leveled the whole town. The house was Commission for Culture and bequeathed by Luisa to her nephew Jose the Arts as one of 26 churches “Dakay” Estrella whom the house was named in the Philippines recognized after. But what makes this store unique and worth visiting is because it is unmanned. This refreshment store is famous for showcasing Ivatan’s honesty. Songsong Ruins The remains of once vibrant community that was wiped out in a 1954 tidal wave. What remains are just the walls of the old houses. Sabtang Island The smallest island of three inhabited islands in Batanes. Discuss the places worth visiting in this island using the information below. Dried fish which is a local staple of the province is abundant in summer months. Handicrafts such as hats and fans are among of export-quality which are also products of Products & the province. Hence, “Catagayan” means a place where “tagay” is found. Through time, it was shortened to Cagayan. The capital city of Cagayan is Tuguegarao, which is also the seat of commerce and trade and center for learning. Today, Cagayan is hailed as “The Smiling Land of Beauty.” Cagayan is bounded on the north by Babuyan Islands, on the west by Ilocos Norte and Apayao, on the east by the Pacific Ocean, and Kalinga and Isabela on the south. It has an area of 9,295.75 square kilometers. Livestock products include cattle, carabaos, and poultry. People in Cagayan are also into woodcraft.. “Carne Ybanag” is the only manufacturer of vacuum-packed and properly labeled processed meat products in Cagayan. The ingenious Cagayanos also take advantage of the abundance of tilapia in their province by turning it into products like burger, nuggets, tocino, and longganisa. Because of this, Cagayan is now dubbed as the country’s Tilapia Capital. Cagayan has also been known for green and ripe carabao mangoes. It is the largest province in Luzon and the second largest province in the country (after Palawan) in terms of land area. It is bounded by Cagayan on the north, the Philippine Sea on the east, Kalinga, Ifugao, and Mt. Province of on the west, and Quirino, Aurora, and Nueva Vizcaya on the south. Its total area is 10,664.6 square kilometers. REGION 2 : CAGAYAN REGION Magat Dam Tourism Complex It is one of the biggest dams in Asia. It serves the primary function of power generation and irrigation. The Magat Dam Tourism Complex offers a variety of water-based activities such as fishing, boating, and water skiing. Sta. Victoria Caves These caves feature naturally formed lattices and rock formations. The Pinzal Falls which is near the caves also offers recreational activities such as swimming and horseback riding to tourists. Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park (Palanan Rainforest) It was designated a national park in 1997. It is also known as Northern Sierra Madre National Park. This is the largest protected area in the country. The rainforest covers more than 300,000 hectares. Researches conducted in the park by national and international organizations concerned with environmental preservations showed the existence of unknown and unnamed species of flora and fauna. This park is also a habitat of the Philippine Eagle and the Cloud Rats. REGION 2 : CAGAYAN REGION St. Mathias Church Situated in Timauini, Isabela, this Spanish era church is also known as Timauini Church. It is known for its unique architecture. The walls are made of bricks and the church also has a one-of-a-kind cylindrical bell tower. On February 24, 1989, St. Mathias Church was declared a National Historical Landmark. San Pablo Church Built in 1624, it is said to be the oldest church in Isabela. Its six-layer bell tower made from adobe bricks is also the tallest in the region. World’s Largest Butaka The World’s Largest Butaka or lounge chair or armchair measures 11 feet and 4 inches in height, 8 inches long, 9 feet and 7 inches wide, and weighs 2,368 kilos. It was constructed by 25 workers in 29 days. REGION 2 : CAGAYAN REGION Festivals Bambanti (Scarecrow) Festival (May) celebrates the bountiful harvest of rice and corn and other agricultural products with street dances and float parade Gakit Festival (May) the town celebrates the use of ‘gakit’, a Gaddang word for raft, by the tribes of Angadanan as their mode of transportation from a town to another through the mighty Cagayan river REGION 2 : CAGAYAN REGION Products, & Crafts, Delicacies, and Cuisine Isabela is primarily an agricultural province. Isabela is known as the “Rice Granary of the North.” In Ilagan, Isabela, the major industry is furniture making. While in Isabela, it also worth to try Pancit Cabagan. It is the specialty of the province of Isabela from the town of Cabagan. Pancit Cabagan is made of miki noodles, quail eggs, vegetables like carrots, spring onions, snow peas, and Chinese cabbage. It is topped with slices of pork meat, liver, lechon or lechon kawali, and crushed chicharon. The cause keeps the entire dish moist and juicy. Isabela is also home to the famous binallay, a special rice cake wrapped in banana leaves. It is topped with a caramelized coconut reduction (latik). Nueva Vizcaya, situated in the heart of Northern Luzon, is considered as the gateway to the vast Cagayan Valley Region People of Nueva Vizcaya, also called Novo Vizcayanos, are great craftsmen. Mt. Pulag National Park Mt. Pulag is located in three different provinces, Benguet, Ifugao, and Nueva Vizcaya. It is the third highest mountain in the Philippines and the highest in Luzon. The National Park is a favorite trekking destination. It has five known trails and one of them is the Ambaguio (Lusod) trail from Nueva Vizcaya. Capisaan Cave System It is the fifth longest cave system in the country. Capisaan Cave System is considered a geologist’s paradise due to its varying calcite formations as well as unique stalagmite and stalactite formations. A subterranean river is found within its four meter length. St. V incent Ferrer Church Declared by the National Museum as a “National Cultureth Treasure”, this church was constructed in the 16 century and one of the oldest churches in Northern Luzon. It has an underground museum which houses centuries old church artifacts. St. Dominic Cathedral It is the first cathedral in the province. It was rebuilt in the same old site and is now twice itsth original size. Aside from maintaining its original 18 century Spanish style façade, it also has the best sounding bells in the Philippines. Festivals Panagyaman Festival (May) - also known as Nueva Vizcaya Day - commemorates the establishment of the civil government of Nueva Vizcaya - celebrated with parades, beauty pageant, trade shows, and agro-industrial fair Citrus Festival (August) - held at Kasibu which is dubbed as Luzon’s This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA citrus capital; Kasibu is home to the increasingly popular perante oranges and a producer of export-quality seedless oranges of different species Kalanguya Festival - celebrates the indigenous way of life of the Kalanguya tribe in the town of Sta. Fe. REGION 2 : CAGAYAN REGION QUIRINO It is the youngest province in the Cagayan Valley Region and was named in honor of the late President Elpidio A. Quirino. Quirino acquired its juridical personality as a result of the division of Nueva Vizcaya on June 18, 1966 under R.A.4734. Three years after its birth as a subprovince, R.A. 5554 was enacted on June 21, 1969 amending R.A. 4734 creating the Municipality of Cabarroguis. On September 10, 1971, R.A. 6394 was passed amending R.A. 5554. This separates the subprovince of Quirino from its mother province of Nueva Vizcaya. A portion of this province was a part of Isabela which was recovered and restored to Nueva Vizcaya by the late Congressman Leon Cabarroguis for which the provincial capital was named. Aglipay Caves and Campsite It consists of over 37 interlinked underground chambers, of which only 8 has been explored. The caves have variety of stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological formations. The 6th cave has a subterranean river and waterfall with an unknown source. It is an ideal habitat for the “kurarapnit”, the local name for insect-eating bat. Madella Falls It is a seven staged falls which is now becoming a popular tourist attraction in Quirino. Governor Rapids Governor Rapids are part of the Cagayan River. Its deep blue water is perfect for white river rafting and kayaking. The rapids frame the Sierra Madre Mountains. The area around the rapids is popular for fishing, swimming, and picnicking. Climbers can also scale the walls of limestone cliffs that overlook the river This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC Panagdadapun Festival (Araw ng Quirino) - commemorates the founding anniversary of the province - showcases the province’s agriculture and trade products - features the province’s rich culture and tradition which strengthens the unity among the 27 ethnic groups living in harmony within the province Aquero Festival (February) - celebrated in Aglipay, Quirino - popular feast-day celebration of Our Lady of Lourdes which originated from France - “Aquero” is a remote and native French word which means “It is a thing,” uttered by the peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France in 1858 when she saw in her vision the apparitions believed to be the Blessed Virgin Mary Products & Crafts, Delicacies, and Cuisine Agriculture is the main industry in Cagayan Valley. Like the other provinces in this region, Quirino’s major crops include rice and corn. These supply the demand of neighboring provinces and the metropolis. Banana as well as banana chips are major products sold in Metro Manila and Pampanga. Fossilized flower has become one of Quirino’s attractions and lucrative livelihood.
