Chapter 1 Verse 1 God spoke to Yonah Verse 2 Go to Nineveh because the people are being wicked Verse 3 Instead of going east to Nineveh Yonah fled God's service and went west towards Tarshish. He went to Yaffo and found a ship going to Tarshish He got on the boat to sail with others to Tarshish away from God's task Verse 4 God cast a storm on the sea and the conditions were near death Verse 5 The sailors were scared and yelled out to their god (sailors worshiped idols) They threw their stuff off the boat to make it lighter Yonah was at the bottom of the boat in a deep sleep ○ Yonah slept to further hide from god and his depression Verse 6 The captain went to Yonah and asked what was going on Told him to call to his god and maybe they would not die ○ Captain is saying the same thing as god Verse 7 The people on the ship say to each other that they should have a lottery to see who on the boat is causing the problems. Lottery lands on Yonah Verse 8 The sailors ask Yonah to tell them why this is happening to them What is his job, where he is from, what is his land and what nation he is from Verse 9 Yonah sings: I am a Hebrew and gog the god of heaven I fear who made the kand and sea. Verse 10 The people become very sacred and ask Yonah what he did and why he is running from god. Verse 11 The sailors ask what they should do to stop the storm Verse 12 Yonah says to throw him off the ship and the water will calm because the storm is his fault. Verse 13 The sailors tried to bring the boat to land but they could not because of the storm. Verse 14 The sailors called to god and said please god don't kill this man and don't put innocent blood on our hands because you are god and that which you desire you do. Verse 15 They through Yonah off the boat and the water immediately calmed down Verse 16 The sailors greatly feared god They made a sacrifice and took vows ○ Rashi: The sailors converted to Judaism Chapter 2 Yonah is in the fish for 3 days and 3 nights and prayed ○ Ibn Caspi: Yonah being in the fish was a dream (all of chapter 2) ○ Ibn Ezra: This must be a miracle as a person could not be in a whale for that long ○ Radak: The fish was created during the 6 days of creation and was predetermined to swallow Yonah since then ○ Malbim: Like a rebirth the fish is teshuvah and prayer and after he comes out a new person ○ R.Jachter: Jewish people have survived a lot of things (miracle) because he is appart of this resilient nation he survives Fish switch from being male to female ○ Rashi: In verse 1 it was male and there was no room to pray. The fish puked Yonah into the mouth of a female fish. The female was more spacious and there was room to pray and be comfortable. ○ Rav Hirsh: In verse 1 it was a masculine death-dealing fish (male traits). In verse 2 the fish was more accommodating and willing which are female traits. There is only one fish the pronouns are just describing the characteristics it has. The rest of the chapter is about Yonah's prayer. Chapter 3 Verse 1 Good spoke to Yonah ‫ׁשֵ נִ ֥ית‬ ○ Yonah was given a second chance by god Verse 2 God says: Go to Nineveh and tell them what I tell you Verse 3 Yonah got up and went to Nineveh It was a 3-day journey Gaon of Vilna ○ The book of Yonah is a fable teaching a life lesson ○ We should not learn it like history ○ Chapter one is about life with a mistake ○ Chapter two is death (in fish) ○ Chapter three is about reincarnation - a second chance to fix mistakes from a previous life Verse 4 Yonah started to go and was one day into the city He told the people that in 40 days Nineveh would be destroyed Verse 5 The people of Nineveh believed in god The people fasted and wore clothes for mourning Verse 6 The word got to the king and he took off his cloak and put on clothes of mourning and sat on ashes. Gaon of Vilna: the 40th day is Yom Kippur Verse 7 The king tools all of Nineveh that no human or animal could eat or drink ○ Animals were told to fast because it would cause them to howl. This will create a somber atmosphere in Nineveh inspiring people to focus on doing teshuvah Verse 9 They all must wear clothes for mourning and cry to god They should all change the evil as god will show compassion God will change from being angry and we will not die Verse 10 God saw that they were repenting and that they left their evil ways Chapter 4 Verse 1 Yonah was mad He did not want the people of Nineveh to be good because they were enemies of Israel. Rashi: It says in 40 days the city will be overturned. It won't anymore through because the people repented. Yonah is worried he will be thought of as a false prophet. Radak: Angry because the Jews are still behaving poorly Verse 2 Yonah prayed and said this is why I fled to Tarshish I know you are compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, very kind, and renouncing punishments Verse 3 God, please kill me as I would rather die than be alive Radak: please kill me so that I do not need to see the Israelites be harmed (by acting badly and by the people of Nineveh). Like Moses erase me from your book and kill me Verse 4 God responded are you deeply grieved Verse 5 Yonah left the city and found a place east of the city He made a sukkah there and sat under it in the shade until he should want happened in Nineveh Verse 6 God made a plant (‫ )קִ יקָ י֞ ֹון‬grow over Yonah to give him shade and stop him from his discomfort. Yonah suddenly became very happy Verse 7 The next day god made a worm that attacked the plant so it died Verse 8 Then the sun rose and god made wind The sun beat down on Yonahs head and he began to feel faint He begged god to kill him again saying he would rather die than be alive Verse 9 God said are you so sad about the plant Yonah said I so much so that I want to die Verse 10 God said you cared about the plant that appeared that you did not grow which appeared and died overnight. Verse 11 And I should not care about Nineveh which has more than 120,000 people who do not yet know their right from their left and many animals as well. Rashi: and many animals as well - adults who have the intelligence of beasts who do not recognize who created them :‫אמת‬ Yonahs name is Yonah benamity (truth) ○ At the beginning Yonah has truth but he loses it in verse 3 when he runs away from god ○ Is now just called Yonah In chapter 3 Yonah has still not regained his truth and is still just called Yonah Truth is missing in chapter 4 verse 2 ○ Yonah feels god is not being truthful so he does not use the word truth ○ This tells us that Yonah feels god is being too kind and forgiving to the people of Nineveh
