RIVERSIDE FIRE AUTHORITY FIELD OPERATING GUIDELINES MOTOR VEHICLE EXTRICATION SCENE SAFETY  Park the rig at a 45-degree angle with wheels turned away from the incident.  Deploy a stand-by, pre-connect line for fire suppression.  Create a work zone per policy. OPERATIONS – PHASES OF EXTICATION PHASE 1:  Scene & vehicle stabilization by chocking/blocking or deflating tires.  Airbag “scanning” – check the vehicle for visual indicators of the presence of airbags.  Battery access and electrical system shutdown – Cutting the negative (“-“) battery cable in 2 places and remove piece.  Hazard control assessment.  Initial patient access – Normal door opening by operating inside/outside door handles or removing side or rear tempered glass window furthest from the patient(s).  Initial emergency medical care.  Patient protection/safety – covering patient with a blanket or tarp.  Determining contents of trunk and hazard assessment. PHASE 2:  Re-check vehicle stabilization  Assure patient protection/safety  Remove side window glass.  Remove interior trim panels – Seatbelt pretensioner, Seatbelt spool mechanism, Nader pin anchor point, B pillar reinforcement areas.  Removing seatbelts by disconnecting/cutting.  Forcing open doors – For doors with SIPS airbags, attack front door hinges, rear doors at latch.  Widen doors – removing B pillar, removing sidewall of vehicle, removing doors.  Cover exposed metal. PHASE 3:  Re-check vehicle stabilization  Assure patient protection/safety  Side and rear glass removal  Windshield glass cutting – Cut laminated glass along dash defroster area between A-pillars.  Removing interior trim panels materials at roof pillars – Check for airbags, stored gas inflators and seatbelt pre-tensioners.  Sever roof pillars – C, B, A sequence of roof pillar cutting for total roof removal.  Roof removal to debris area.  Cover exposed metal PHASE 4:  Re-check vehicle stabilization.  Assure patient protection/safety.  Cut steering wheel ring.  Cut A-pillar and/or rocker channel.  Roll or Jack Dash  Cover exposed metal
