Synthetic division Synthetic division > A shortcut method for dividing polynomials by linear factors of the form (x - k). > More efficient than long division. S 1. Set up the problem: Write the coefficients of the dividend in a row. T Write the value of k (from the divisor x - k) to the left. E 2. Bring down the leading coefficient: P Bring down the first coefficient. S 3. Multiply and add: Multiply the number in the bottom row by k. OF Add the result to the corresponding coefficient in the top row. Repeat for each remaining coefficient. S. 4. Interpret the result: The numbers in the bottom row are the coefficients of the quotient. D. The last number is the remainder. FOR EXAMPLE: Practice problems: Synthetic Long vs. Division Division Synthetic vs. Long Division Division activity
