Intensive Reading II - Syllabus Instructor Ms. Spitulski E-mail [email protected] Room 12-102 Phone (321) 242-6400 ex:32622 Course Description: Intensive Reading is designed to improve reading skills in every part of your life that involves reading. I also aim to get reading to play a bigger part in your life. We’ll explore various strategies and skills to improve your reading comprehension throughout this class, and beyond. If you make an effort in this class, you should see improvement in every other class you take this year, and throughout high school. There will be little homework, but the trade-off is that you will make a consistent effort to be an outstanding student while you are here. The characteristics of an outstanding reading student are: you will be an active member of the class; you will be thinking about your work and not just going through the motions; you will be open-minded and curious. Program- Read 180: This year, we will be using READ180! Below is an overview of my expectations of you and an explanation of the class format. Online Work: We will utilize the online READ180 portal almost daily. Your READ180 portal delivers customized lessons and instruction; your online work will be different from that of your peers. It is a very powerful tool to help strengthen your ability to become a better reader and writer! This is called the Student Application rotation. Students will need to complete 80 minutes per week and ONE segment per month. Textbook: Your textbook is called the ReaL Book. Your ReaL Book is divided into 3 parts called workshops. I will issue you each workshop as we progress. We will start with workshop 10, then move through 11, and end the year with book 12. All work will be completed in google classroom unless otherwise noted. Novels: You will read several novels this year in your Independent Reading rotation. Some are digital through READ180, while others are on paper. You have many titles to choose from! In addition we will be reading a class novel and participating in a book club/class read towards the second semester. Class Format: This class is conducted in rotations. There are times when we conduct class in a traditional, Whole Group manner where all students are receiving the same instruction. The class will also consist of three different rotations. Small group, working directly with the teacher in the RealBook. Student Application, working independently online in the READ180 portal. Independent Reading, will consist of reading novels and completing connected assignments. Grading: Grading will follow the policy of the Brevard County School District A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = 0% - 59% I do not “give” you a grade. The grade you will receive is the grade that you have earned. Evaluations: Grading will be done on a point scale with daily assignments ranging from 10-80 points each as well as projects, quizzes, or tests multiplied by up to four times. Bell Work – will be graded weekly according to their evidence of comprehension and insight. Tests/Quizzes – quizzes will be given to assess your knowledge of what we are working on. Daily Work – consists of class participation, class work, and other daily instructional components. You are expected to participate in class discussions and complete all assigned work. Projects/Written Assignments – will be graded according to effort put forth, neatness, and overall knowledge of the topic. Novel Work- will be reviewed and graded based on content and effort based on comprehension of the novel. Rules and Expectations: ★ We treat everyone in this room, including ourselves, with kindness and respect ★ We use technology appropriately ★ We ask for help when we need it ★ We come to class ready to focus, learn, and work ★ We are respectful of each other's space and our virtual/physical learning space. EGHS Bathroom Policy Students will receive FOUR hall passes in each course for each nine-week grading period. Hall Passes may be used to visit the restroom or obtain water from the fountain. Students will use the restroom in building 25. EGHS Tardy Policy Students are allowed two tardies, once they reach the 3rd tardy (across ALL classes), the student will receive a lunch detention. Every 12th tardy will result in a day of ISS. Failure to serve a detention will result in an ISS. If you receive three tardies in one day, you will receive OSS the next day. EGHS Phone Policy Students are not allowed on their phone during class time for any reason, including restroom breaks. If you have your phone out and you do not put it away after the first time asked, a dean will be called to collect your phone. Students are only allowed to use their personal device during class transitions, lunch, and of course before and after school. If you receive 2 phone referrals, your parent/guardian must pick up your phone from the office. Habitual offenses will result in harsher consequences. Procedures: Before Entering the Classroom Use the restroom! You only get four passes per quarter. You cannot go in the first or last 10 minutes of class. When You First Enter the Classroom Grab your laptop and login in. Be seated in your assigned seat with your headphones ready. Begin Bell Work. When the Bell Rings to End the Period Stay in your seat. We will not leave until everyone is sitting in a seat. Pick up all books, trash, etc. Sign out of your laptop. Laptop Use When finished working, restart the computer, close, return to the CORRECT NUMBER SLOT on cart and PLUG IN. Computer games are strictly prohibited in the classroom and computer lab unless otherwise stated. Do not pound on the keyboard, repeatedly click the mouse or be destructive to your device or your assignments will become paper/pencil. Late Work & Make-up Work Students have 3 days to make up any missing work once returned. The STUDENT is responsible for obtaining any missed assignments. I am not required to find you and hand you this information. Do not interrupt my teaching time to get missing work. (see Google Classroom - Agenda Slides) When turning in an assignment late, you must fill out a late work form and place it in the correct periods folder. Students will have one week to turn in late assignments before it is a zero. o 1 day - 10% o 2 days - 20% o 3 days - 30% o 4+ days - 40% Consequences of Misbehavior: 1st offense- Warning 2nd offense- Parent notification 3rd offense- Detention with parent notification 4th offense- Referral to the office **The above steps may be skipped depending on severity of misbehavior.** Helpful Hints: Remember, I am here to help you in any way I can. If you need extra help, you are welcome to ask me any questions you might have or arrange to see me before/after school for help. I am happy to answer all of your questions to the best of my ability and will do my best to make things clear for you. It is up to you to make the first step. Situations may arise that are not covered in this syllabus. The first rule is always to use common sense. If you think that doing something might get you in trouble, don’t do it. If a student is seen with a phone they will receive one verbal warning and then a referral if it is seen again. It is encouraged that students leave their phones in their backpacks to avoid the temptation of pulling out their phone. Please review the following school wide phone disciple ladder below. 1st referral - Phone is taken to the dean's office and can be collected by the student at the end of the day. Student will receive 1 day of detention. 2nd referral - Phone is taken to the dean's office and a parent/guardian must pick up the device. Student will receive 1 day of ISS. 3rd referral - Loss of phone/device privileges on campus for 30 days. Student will receive 2 days of ISS. 4th+ referral - Loss of phone/device privileges on campus for the remainder of the year. Student will receive 2 days of OSS.
