This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. II. A. a. Operating System b. Language Processor c. Utility Software a. Here is a list of examples of an operating system. Let's take a look and you might spot some familiar names of system software: **For desktop computers, laptops and tablets:** Microsoft Windows Mac (for Apple devices) Linux **For smartphones:** Apple's iOS Google's Android Windows Phone OS **Functions of Operating System** The main functions of an Operating system are: 1. Device Management (Input/Output) 2. Memory Management 3. Runs Software 4. Processor Management 5. File Management 6. Security b. **Language Processor** Each software is created by writing programs is computer languages. Some of the popular computer language are Java, C and C++. As we know that a computer can understand only the machine language, which comprises 'zeroes' and 'ones'. Therefore, programs written in these languages cannot be recognized by a computer. Here, a language processor plays a vital role in translating the programming language into machine language**.** c. **Utility Software** Utility programs perform specific tasks usually related to managing a computer, its devices or its programs. These programs assist in the smooth functioning of the computer system and help it to perform better. Some utilities help you to avoid virus attack, to take backup of data, to recover data that has been accidentally erased, and so on. These include anti-virus, backup, disk repair, file management, security, and network programs**.** **Example of Utility Softwares** Anti-virus Utility -- Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, etc. Compression -- Zip, Winzip, bzip2, Winrar, etc B. These are sets of programs, developed by programmers in order to perform specific types of jobs, like doing calculations, arranging data in an organize manner, designing professional documents, creating images and logos, etc. Computer languages are use in creating these types of software. The application software can be further divided into two categories: General purpose application software -- can perform many tasks to fulfill the general needs of people. **Some examples of general purpose application software are:** III.
