Stroke rehabilitation Interprofessional management Presented by Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Language Pathology and Audiology with staff form the Skills Centre Why do we need a team? Each one of the team members has a unique contribution All of us want to provide optimal client centered health care None of us can do it on our own Occupational Therapist Occupational therapy is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement. (WFOT 2012) Physiotherapist A discipline that focus on improving the physical and functional activity of patients in order to minimize disability and improve quality of life. Physiotherapists work within a multi-disciplinary/ interprofessional collaboration team of health workers. We do the following among others: Improve Range of Movement Normalize Muscle Tone Muscle strengthening Improve muscle length & prevent contractures Prevent secondary disabilities like – scoliosis, shoulder sub-luxation & dislocation Improve cardio-vascular endurance, among others… Speech therapist and Audiologist Health professional concerned with maximising the patient’s communication and safe feeding for improved quality of life SLP & A work within a multi-disciplinary team which involves the family members The main aim is to ensure that following a stroke, the patient is able to: - Understand spoken and written language - Express themselves verbally - Feed and swallow safely and effectively, eliminating the risk of aspiration and its complications This is done trough restoring, adjusting or compensating for impaired functioning
