PSHS Social Science 2: World History | Page 1 of 6 Today, we rarely see people scavenging for food. But before, that was the mode of the early people to survive. They roamed from one place to another in search of food. Historians of the 20 th century believe that the early people may have hunted, but most of the time they may have scavenged their food. The tools that were found near the bones of the early people were more for cutting meat and bones rather than for killing animals. However in time, the scavenging stopped. We may project that this happened because they may have discovered a practice that could yield a more stable source of food. And what could that be? Agriculture is the science of growing and cultivating crops and rearing animals. In this practice, people learn to produce food without the efforts of traveling, hunting, and scavenging. Then, people started to discover more about growing crops and domesticating animals. This phenomenal change in lifestyle gave the early people a more stable source of food which in turn gave them more energy and time to focus on other things to do. The steady source of food enabled early people to populate in agricultural villages which eventually will grow to develop into cities. Since food became steady and more than sufficient for all people in the cities there came also specialization of work such as weavers, scribes and artisans. Another effect of agriculture to the early people was the rise of non-nomadic living since they settled to places where crops can be grown in massive quantities. PSHS Social Science 2: World History | Page 4 of 6 To survive, the early people started to become scavenge for food. But eventually, the practice ceased when they had discovered a better way to sustain themselves. That was agriculture. In agriculture, the early people learned to grow crops and domesticate animals. This gave them a steady supply of food which in turn resulted in the growth of population and creation of agricultural villages. These remarkable achievements of mankind would result in even a bigger achievement - the formation of civilizations.
