SPECIALIZED CELLS LO: Structure & function DO NOW  Recall and write 3-5 points from the last lesson. Learning objectives 1. To describe the structure and functions of different specialised cells. Success Criteria 1. To identify and name various specialized cells such as muscle cells, nerve cells, red blood cells, and others. 2.To describe distinctive structural features relevant to the cell’s function. MOTOR NEURON:  Dendrites are the structures on the neuron that receive electrical messages.  The axon plays a crucial role in connecting neurons and transmitting the electrical impulse from the cell body to the nerve ending.  Myelin sheath provides insulation for the axon and speeds up signal transmission. MOTOR RELAY NEURON NEURON THREE TYPES OF NEURONS SENSORY NEURON ROOT HAIR CELLS – Absorption of water from the 1. Largesoil. surface area. 2. Large number of mitochondria  Energy for active transport. 3. Concentrated vacuole to help water move by osmosis. SPERM CELL  They are male sex cells.  Function: Reproduction by fertilizing an egg cell. EGG CELL  Larger than sperm cells  Function: Reproduction CILIATED CELL  Found in the nose & trachea – among other places.  Flicking movement – carries dust and bacteria away from the lungs. RED BLOOD CELL  Combines with Oxygen and transport it around the body. MUSCLE CELL Ciliated cells: tiny hairs called cilia that beat/waft to move dust and pathogens out of the airways and prevent their Goblet cells: produce mucus which trap entry into the lungs. dust and bacteria. Ciliated epithelial cells DEFINITIONS:  Tissue: A group of cells with similar functions working together to perform a shared function.  Organ: A group of tissues working together to perform a specific function.  System: A group of organs with related functions working together to perform a body function. YOU DO PLENARY  Answer the following multiple-choice questions in your notebook. Question 1 ? Question 2 ? Question 3 ? Question 4 ? Question 5 ? Question 6 ?
