What is the purpose of ADA 2. What individuals are covered under ADA laws? 3. **What is considered "reasonable accommodation"?** 4. When would an employer NOT be required to provide reasonable accommodations? 5. What might be some examples of accommodations that might be considered unreasonable? 6. What is the seat width of a standard wheelchair? Bariatric wheelchair? 7. What is the turning radius for a standard wheelchair? Bariatric wheelchair? 8. What are the required dimensions of a ramp? Here's a summary of the answers to these questions related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and wheelchair specifications: 1\. \*\*Purpose of the ADA\*\*: \- The ADA was enacted to prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities and to ensure equal access to public facilities, employment, transportation, and other essential areas of public life. 2\. \*\*Individuals Covered Under ADA Laws\*\*: \- ADA laws cover individuals with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit one or more major life activities. This includes people with visible disabilities and certain chronic or mental health conditions. 3\. \*\*Definition of "Reasonable Accommodation"\*\*: \- Reasonable accommodations are modifications or adjustments in a job, work environment, or the way things are typically done to enable a person with a disability to have equal employment opportunities. Examples include modifying work schedules, adjusting equipment, and providing assistive technology. 4\. \*\*When an Employer is NOT Required to Provide Accommodations\*\*: \- Employers are not required to provide accommodations if doing so would cause "undue hardship," meaning significant difficulty or expense relative to the organization's size, resources, or structure. 5\. \*\*Examples of Unreasonable Accommodations\*\*: \- Unreasonable accommodations might include extensive renovations, such as restructuring a building for accessibility beyond reasonable modifications, providing very costly equipment, or assigning essential job duties to other employees. 6\. \*\*Seat Width of Standard and Bariatric Wheelchairs\*\*: \- Standard wheelchair seat width is typically \*\*18 inches\*\*. Bariatric wheelchairs are wider, usually between \*\*22 and 30 inches\*\*. 7\. \*\*Turning Radius for Standard and Bariatric Wheelchairs\*\*: \- The turning radius for a standard wheelchair is around \*\*60 inches\*\*. For bariatric wheelchairs, the turning radius is generally larger due to the wider frame, often between \*\*60 and 70 inches\*\*. 8\. \*\*Required Dimensions of a Ramp\*\*: \- ADA guidelines specify a maximum slope of \*\*1:12\*\* (for every inch of rise, there must be 12 inches of ramp length), a maximum rise of \*\*30 inches\*\* without a landing, and a minimum width of \*\*36 inches\*\*. Handrails are required if the ramp rise exceeds 6 inches. Shift and Share: Practice Cases ------------------------------- - ##### Start with your assigned case and perfect it. Write your goal and short SOAP note on the wall nearby - ###### With the start of the shift and share you will demonstrate your case as the teacher and then will provide feedback when you are the learner 1. **Clark Kent** is s/p R THA (posterior approach). He is eager to get back to his job as a reporter at the Daily Planet that requires him to do a lot of walking and climbing stairs. Clark is sitting in the w/c when you arrive. Your goals for therapy today are to 1) teach Clark's friend Lois to help him bring the w/c up the 1 step to enter the newsroom; 2) develop a balance exercise to help him prepare for standing on the bus and 3) transfer him to bed to take a nap. W/C Skills ---------------------------------- --------------------- Balance Exercise Transfer Stand , step, pivot Write a Goal and brief SOAP note 2. **Don Diego de la Vega** is s/p L CVA resulting with R hemiplegia. He is very eager to return to sword battling. He has poor standing balance and with his eyes closed he leans to the R. Don Diego wants to work on his ability to reach for his sword in front of him without falling over. He is supine in bed and your goal for our therapy session is: 1) transfer to the w/c, 2) teach his friend to bring him up the ramp in the w/c, 3) work on his balance in the clinic. W/C Skills ---------------------------------- -- Balance Exercise Transfer Write a Goal and brief SOAP note 3. **Bruce Banner** has paraplegia as a result of a work injury to his SCI. He has decreased shoulder ROM on his L UE limiting his ability to fully extend. As he is still getting acclimated to his new SCI he wants to work on his balance while sparring (to dodge punches) and catch heavy objects at work. During his session you want to 1) check the fit of his wheelchair, 2) work on his balance, and 3) transfer him from the w/c to the floor. When you arrive he is supine in bed. W/C Skills ---------------------------------- -- Balance Exercise Transfer Write a Goal and brief SOAP note 4. **Selina Kyle** is s/p traumatic B transfemoral amputations from a fall. When you arrive she is sitting in her w/c. She reports that she is having trouble balancing when she is sitting on the edge of her bed and she gets bumped by her other cats. During your session you want to 1) teach her to propel her wheelchair in tight spaces and through a door, 2) transfer from the w/c to the bed, and 3) work on her balance in the clinic.
