Topic Abstract Form THESIS/PROJECT TOPIC PROPOSAL FORM PROGRAM Name/s: Bautista, Anthony Josh E. Dalida, Andrei Dnalle Y. Project Title: Tap, Touch, and Track: An IoT Integrated Student Attendance Monitoring System Using Biometrics and RFID Sensors Research Cluster: Project Adviser: Engr. Rendell Jason Lagman Co-Adviser Name of Co-Adviser Date Submitted: September 4 2024 Project Duration: September 2024 - December 2024 Project Abstract: Traditional attendance recording is done manually using index cards, logbooks, or register booklets. This practice can lead to impersonation and forgeries. Manual attendance checking also consumes a considerable amount of time, is prone to human error, and does not possess real-time tracking capabilities that could hinder the accuracy of the attendance being tracked. Several electronic based techniques were developed to provide a more efficient and secure method. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), for one, has been used in diverse applications in transportation, tracking, monitoring, and security. It uses radio waves and transmits wireless information in the form of tags and cards to identify objects. Fingerprint scanning on the other hand, is the most commonly used biometrics system for its security and ease of access. These sensors will be integrated in designing an efficient attendance monitoring system that records and monitors the students. ESP8266 allows for wireless communication among components and sends the information on an online database through the utilization of its IoT technology. This project implements automation effectively and is beneficial for schools, universities, or any workplace. Pre-Requisite(s): Courses, programming skills, soft and hard skills, etc. Research Objectives: Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to assess the 1. Effectiveness of RFID technology as a means of recording student attendance 2. Integrated monitoring database using google sheets 3. Biometrics scanning for additional security Resources Needed: Signature of Adviser Date Submitted: September 4, 2024 Checklist to be verified by the Research Cluster Leader based on the deliberations by the Topic Evaluation Committee. Please tick appropriately and put N/A if not applicable No. Particulars Tick 1 The topic falls within the scope of the Research Cluster. 2 The topic proposal meets the expectation of the Research Cluster (Clear background and statement of the research problem, research objectives). Decision of the Topic Evaluation Committee (RC) Approved Needs Improvement Disapproved Signed by Research Cluster Chairman Signature over Printed Name Date: Working Principle 1. The professor uses the fingerprint scanner to turn on the device 2. Students scan their key cards to the rfid reader 3. Each student’s data is recorded in the google sheets attendance system for their time in 4. After the class, the students scan their cards for their time out record 5. A daily list of absent and late students will be sent to the professor Key Features 1. Fingerprint Activated An AS608 Fingerprint Reader Sensor will be used to activate the ESP8266 controlling the RFID key reader. This would ensure that the students would only be able to use the attendance system after the professor used their fingerprint. 2. LCD Display The LCD displays the current time and the phrase “scan your cards here”. Once a student successfully uses his card, it will display the student’s sr code with the phrase “attendance recorded”. 3. RFID key reader The RFID key reader is connected to an ESP8266 microcontroller which will upload and record each student’s attendance via wireless connection. 4. 3d Printed Case A 3d printed case would be ideal for this project, in order to customize its size to the specifications required. This would provide a sleek design that suits each component’s size. 5. Google Sheets Database Google sheets will be used to record and display the attending student’s name, sr code, section, and their time in and time out.
